HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT, OPERATION THEATRE
Job Description
1. Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Philosophy, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.
2. Understands the service organization structure.
3. Informs Nurse-In-Charge or Operation Manager when changes occur in circumstances which affect standards of care.
4. Attends meetings held by the services in order to discuss issues and matters pertaining to the operation of the service.
5. Daily routine:
- Makes and tidies patients’ beds. Change linen when necessary.
- Carbolizes beds and equipment and tidies patient’s bedside lockers, cardiac tables, chairs and surrounding areas.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the unit, pantry, treatment room, utility and linen room.
- Collects, cleans and fills hot water flasks for patients.
- Dispatching: charge tickets, CSSS items, specimens, etc. to relevant services.
6. Answers phone calls and relay messages.
7. Responds to patient’s call bell promptly.
8. Assists the qualified staff in the following:
- Carries out basic nursing care for patient’s comfort, safety, nutritional and elimination needs.
- Admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
- Gives bed bath and provide total personal hygiene to non-ambulatory patients. Assist ambulatory patients when necessary.
- While doing dressing, setting intravenous lines, catheterization, vulva swabbing etc.
- Clears the trolley after use. Washes instruments used and place in the appropriate place.
- Recording daily charges for disposable/equipment/consumable items used in the unit into patient’s charges accordingly.
- Maintaining record of intake and output chart.
- Lifting, turning and positioning of patients in bed, bed to chair and bed to trolley using the correct body mechanics.
- Treatment of pressure sores.
- Taking diet orders for new admission and serving meals and drinks, collects trays.
- Helps to feed patients orally.
- Prepares drink for patients at night and when necessary.
- Chaperons Consultant in doing procedure in the absence of trained nurses.
9. Accompanies the nurses to send patient to OT and from OT.
10. Escorts patients to other services for diagnostic investigations.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE SPECIFIC AREA
Preparation of the unit and patient
1. Cleans the unit thoroughly in the morning.
2. Cleans and wipe the OT tables, lamps and walls.
3. Checks the supplies and ensures adequate stock for anaesthetic machines. 4. Checks gas cylinders.
5. Receives patient from other unit.
6. Wheel patient to the induction room.
7. Accompanies patient until checked by the anaesthetist.
8. Wheels patient to the OT room and lift patient onto the OT table.
During surgical procedures
1. Assists the Anaesthetist.
2. Adjusts light as instructed by the surgeon.
3. Maintains sterility and surgically clean environment of the OT at all times.
After surgical procedure
1. Wheels patient to the recovery room.
2. Cleans floor, OT tables, walls and lamps.
3. Disinfects the OT room and scrub room after each case.
4. Mops and cleans the whole unit at the end of the day.
5. Tidies the unit, off the lights and locks theatre before leaving off duty.
6. Washes and polishes the whole unit weekly.
7. Collects medicines and surgical supply from the store when necessary.
8. Reports to the Operation Manager any loss or malfunction of machines and lights.
9. Any other duties as directed by the Operation Manager, Nurse-in-charge, and Surgeon.
In Centre Sterile Supply Service (CSSS)
1. Receives and checks used sets from the wards
2. Issues the clean sets, on exchange basis.
3. Washes and dries instruments.
4. Checks the instruments are in good condition and sets are complete.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS
1. Packs and labels the sets before sending for sterilization.
2. Maintains the cleanliness of the working area e.g. sinks, tables, trolleys etc. 3. Maintains the cleanliness of the linen store
4. Maintains the cleanliness of the stocks and rearranges it neatly.
5. Assists in inventory of linen and instruments.
6. Collects solutions, tapes, sutures and instruments from the store.
7. Any other duties as directed by the Unit Manager / SRN in charge.
Job Requirement
EDUCATION: Possess academic qualification of SPM
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES:
- On the job training/in-service training will be provided.
- Experience working in hospital setting is an advantage.
