The Role
As Hotel Receptionist, you will serve as the primary ambassador for the property, managing daily front desk operations with professionalism, efficiency, and genuine warmth.
• Welcoming guests warmly upon arrival, verifying booking details, issuing room keys, and delivering a smooth check-in experience.
• Managing accommodation reservations received via telephone, email, direct walk-ins, and online booking channels.
• Operating the hotel property management system to process card payments, pre-authorisations, and billing reconciliations accurately.
• Assisting guests with local enquiries, recommending Shrewsbury sights and dining spots, and arranging transport where required.
• Responding to guest feedback and resolving any complaints constructively and empathetically to ensure a positive outcome.
• Communicating regularly with housekeeping and maintenance teams to confirm room readiness and resolve maintenance requests promptly.
• Operating the central telephone switchboard, transferring calls efficiently, and recording detailed messages for colleagues.
• Coordinating checkout procedures, reviewing folios, processing settling balances, and inviting guest feedback on departure.
• Maintaining an orderly, secure, and impeccably presented reception desk and lobby environment throughout the day.
About You
• Proven front-of-house customer service experience, ideally gained within hotel reception, serviced accommodation, or a similar hospitality setting.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage positively with a wide variety of guests.
• Practical familiarity with computerised hotel reservation or property management systems and electronic payment terminals.
• Proven ability to remain composed, polite, and efficient during peak arrival and departure periods under pressure.
• Strong numerical competence and high attention to detail when handling guest accounts, invoicing, and till reconciliations.
• Flexibility to work on a rotational shift pattern that includes early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
• Good general knowledge of Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire area to guide visitors and provide useful recommendations.
• A proactive work ethic and an enthusiasm for delivering memorable customer care as part of a collaborative team.
A Typical Day
Your shift begins with a structured handover, reviewing daily occupancy levels, VIP arrivals, and any specific guest requirements. Throughout the morning, you will assist departing guests with smooth checkouts, balance accounts, and coordinate with housekeeping to monitor room turnaround. In the afternoon, you will handle reservation enquiries via phone and email, update system records, and prepare registration packs for incoming visitors. Between greeting new arrivals and answering guest queries at the desk, you will oversee lobby presentation and liaise with maintenance on any urgent tasks. The day concludes with balancing your till drawer, preparing key cards for evening arrivals, and briefing incoming colleagues on ongoing guest requests.
