Arctic Kingdom Polar Expeditions operates wilderness lodges and expedition experiences across the Canadian Arctic, including Blachford Lake Lodge in the Northwest Territories. Our work spans remote field operations, guest experiences, and community partnerships across some of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world.
Role Overview
The Manager, Human Resources is responsible for establishing and leading a comprehensive human resources function across all Arctic Kingdom business segments.
This role is also a key driver of organizational transformation, supporting leadership in implementing structural, cultural, and operational change across both field and corporate environments.
The position is based in the Yellowknife offices, with occasional travel to the lodge, and Head Office in Mississauga
Key Responsibilities
Establish and Lead the Human Resources Function
- Build and institutionalize Arctic Kingdom's HR function to support current and future business needs across all operating segments.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standardized HR policies and programs, including compensation structures, benefits, time-off, lieu days, the FAM program, and workplace policies.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to management and employees by addressing employee relations matters, grievances, and workplace issues.
- Develop and execute HR strategies and initiatives aligned with Arctic Kingdom's overall business strategy.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, professional, and high-performance workplace culture.
- Design, implement, and oversee a performance management and appraisal system that drives accountability and excellence.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable employment legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Recruit, train, and manage HR staff as the function grows.
Champion Field-Based Organizational Transformation
- Empower the workforce by supporting the transition of seasonal employees from short-term roles to engaged stakeholders who understand and support company objectives.
- Build leadership agility by developing operations leaders into innovative, adaptable, and solution-oriented change leaders.
- Enhance field visibility by increasing leadership presence in operational environments and ensuring executives receive accurate, firsthand insights.
- Strengthen communication channels between field teams and remote leadership to enable timely, transparent, and effective information flow.
- Institutionalize operational discipline by implementing systems, processes, and accountability mechanisms that reinforce consistent adherence to operating standards and protocols.
Support Organizational Change and Governance
- Collaborate with the leadership team to review, refine, and implement the Company's mission, vision, values, strategy, and goals.
- Assist in planning and executing organizational restructuring initiatives, including change management and internal communications.
- Develop, implement, and promote a company-wide code of ethics and conduct.
Risk Management & HR Compliance — NWT Perspective
- Ensure compliance with the NWT Employment Standards Act — wages, hours, vacation, leaves, and termination requirements
- Own OHS compliance under the NWT Safety Act, working with the WSCC on hazard prevention, training, and safety programs
- Maintain compliant employee recordkeeping across the organization
- Uphold the NWT Human Rights Act — non-discrimination, accommodation, and harassment prevention
- Manage WSCC registration, claims, and return-to-work coordination
- Manage HRcompliance across our NT, NL, and ON jurisdictions
- Serve as our primary contact for employment-related audits and inquiries
Other Duties
- Undertake additional responsibilities and special projects as assigned from time to time in support of organizational priorities.
What You Bring
- Progressive, senior-level HR leadership experience, ideally including building or scaling an HR function from the ground up.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous governments, organizations, or communities, with genuine cultural awareness and relationship-building skills.
- Working knowledge of employment legislation across the jurisdictions Arctic Kingdom operates in (NT, NL, ON).
- Experience with HRIS platforms (BambooHR preferred) and payroll systems (Ceridian preferred).
- Comfort operating in both remote field environments and corporate office settings, with a willingness to travel.
- Strong change management, organizational design, and employee relations skills.
- Excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to build trust across a geographically dispersed workforce.
