Summary

Maintains and preserves the USS Lexington by performing hull preservation, painting, deck maintenance, and corrosion control while coordinating with other departments and operating heavy equipment.

Scope: To complete assignments relevant to painting tasks, hull preservation, proper deck maintenance, and overall deck shipboard responsibilities. Maintains and preserves USS Lexington. To demonstrate the ability to perform boatswains’ work, seamanship ethics and principles.

Responsibilities:

  • Initial responsibility of ensuring the spaces and structures are properly preserved, painted, and cleaned.
  • Evaluation of spaces with overall concern regarding materials and time of completion.
  • Coordinate schedule with that of other departments such as Engineering, Plumbing, Electrical, and Curatorial so that smooth transitions are acquired when the Hull Tech department is finished and the next department begins its work.
  • Painting and highlighting of inadequate ship structures that pose safety problems along new tour routes and where the constant flow of personnel traffic occurs.
  • Responsible for corrosion control. This includes sanding, sandblasting, priming, and painting.
  • Maintenance of deck/paint and preservation including the following:
    1. Safety/Training/Qualifications Standards
    2. Time management
    3. Procurement of materials paint formula and paint mixtures
    4. Maintenance of daily projects
    5. Collateral assignments
  • Operate heavy equipment: Forklift, cranes, elevator, scissor lift, JLG, etc.
  • Works as a team member with other departments and volunteers to ensure assigned projects are completed timely.
  • Must be competent to direct visitors.
  • Must Be capable of understanding and implementing the Lexington’s Safety Program.
  • Must be capable of understanding and implementing the Lexington’s Heavy Weather Plan.
  • Perform any other job duties as delegated by Hull Technician Supervisor or Director of Operations.

Knowledge Required: Should be knowledgeable in all aspects of restoration, each area requires interior and exterior expertise in the manner of preparation of metal condition, usage of various chemical agents, and paint variations. Should be fully aware of Federal, State, and Maritime guidelines in the proper application of preservations and paints.

License/Certification Requirements: Valid Texas driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
