Balonne Shire Council has a dedicated team of 110+ staff and population of 4,500 people who live in the surrounding towns of St George, Thallon, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Nindigully, Mungindi and Hebel.


About the role

Balonne Shire Council is seeking an experienced and motivated ICT Network Engineer to take ownership of Council's network and cybersecurity environment and play a key role in shaping the future of our technology infrastructure

Reporting to the IT Coordinator, the ICT Network Engineer is Council's primary technical authority for network and security infrastructure. This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, management, and budgeting of Council's network and security systems across multiple sites.

You will lead the security component of Council's ICT Strategy, manage critical network and cybersecurity platforms, and ensure Council maintains a secure, reliable, and high-performing technology environment.


Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on ICT network and cybersecurity matters

  • Lead the planning, delivery, and management of network and security projects

  • Maintain and improve Council's network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, wireless, and NBN services

  • Manage cybersecurity systems, including firewalls, endpoint protection, identity and access management, and threat detection

  • Administer and maintain Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender, Azure, Entra, and Exchange Online environments

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate network and security risks

  • Manage network and security budgets, software licensing, and procurement activities.

  • Develop and maintain ICT policies, procedures, and technical documentation

  • Provide security awareness training and technical guidance to ICT staff and Council employees


About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline, and/or extensive experience in network and security management

  • A current driver's licence

  • Strong experience managing enterprise network and security environments.

  • Knowledge of networking technologies, firewalls, Microsoft cloud and security platforms, and cybersecurity best practices

  • Experience managing ICT budgets, software licensing, and vendor relationships.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

  • A minimum of five years' experience in a network and security-focused ICT role
