Infrastructure Architect

The Infrastructure Architect will design and manage complex hybrid and cloud environments, focusing on AWS, containerization, and automation. The role involves leading infrastructure modernization, implementing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring robust security and network architecture.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a highly experienced Infrastructure Architect to lead the design and evolution of complex hybrid and cloud infrastructure environments.
This is a hands-on architecture role suited to someone with strong expertise across AWS, network infrastructure, compute, storage, DevOps, automation and security. You will play a key role in infrastructure modernisation, cloud adoption, automation and operational resilience, while providing technical leadership across engineering and infrastructure teams.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud & Infrastructure Architecture
- Design secure, scalable and highly available multi-cloud and hybrid architectures, with strong AWS expertise.
- Define infrastructure architecture standards, frameworks and best practices across cloud, network, compute, storage and security.
- Lead cloud migration, adoption and infrastructure modernisation initiatives.
- Architect containerised and serverless environments using Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, Lambda and Step Functions.
Network Architecture
- Design and optimise enterprise and cloud networking across VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPN, load balancing, WAF, routing and network segmentation.
- Provide architectural guidance across LAN/WAN, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, IPAM and network security.
- Ensure robust integration between on-premise and cloud environments.
Compute, Virtualisation & Storage
- Design and oversee enterprise compute platforms including VMware, Hyper-V, EC2 and bare-metal infrastructure.
- Develop scalable storage, backup, archival and disaster recovery architectures across SAN/NAS and object storage.
- Drive performance optimisation, capacity planning and infrastructure hardening.
DevOps & Automation
- Lead the design and implementation of CI/CD pipelines, with GitLab preferred.
- Drive infrastructure automation using Terraform, CloudFormation and Ansible.
- Champion DevOps/SRE practices including observability, monitoring, incident management and reliability engineering.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration and policy enforcement.
Security & Governance
- Embed security controls across cloud and infrastructure environments, including IAM, KMS, encryption, SIEM and security baselines.
- Partner with security teams on Zero Trust, identity governance, compliance and audit readiness.
Technical Leadership
- Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure, architecture and production issues.
- Mentor cloud, infrastructure, DevOps and operations engineers.
- Collaborate closely with application, network, security and engineering teams.
- Produce architecture documentation and communicate technical solutions to senior stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of overall IT infrastructure experience, with 5+ years in cloud architecture and DevOps.
- Strong hands-on expertise in AWS; Azure or GCP exposure is advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise networking, including routing, VPN, firewalls, load balancing, DNS and cloud networking.
- Experience with VMware/virtualisation, enterprise storage, backup and disaster recovery.
- Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes and AWS EKS.
- Experience with CI/CD, GitOps and release automation.
- Strong Infrastructure-as-Code experience, particularly Terraform, with CloudFormation or Ansible advantageous.
- Scripting/programming experience with Python, Bash or PowerShell.
- Knowledge of cloud monitoring and observability tools such as CloudWatch, CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs and OpenTelemetry.
- Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM, KMS, encryption and network security.
Certifications
- AWS Solutions Architect – Professional preferred; Associate certification considered for candidates progressing towards Professional.
- Additional certifications in Azure, GCP, Kubernetes or Cyber Security are advantageous.
Preferred Experience
- Designing and managing hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.
- Designing DR/BCP strategies for mission-critical systems.
- Leading large-scale infrastructure modernisation and cloud transformation programmes.
- Experience within financial services or other highly regulated environments.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and technical presentation skills.
