Infrastructure Architect

Summary

The Infrastructure Architect will design and manage complex hybrid and cloud environments, focusing on AWS, containerization, and automation. The role involves leading infrastructure modernization, implementing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring robust security and network architecture.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly experienced Infrastructure Architect to lead the design and evolution of complex hybrid and cloud infrastructure environments.

This is a hands-on architecture role suited to someone with strong expertise across AWS, network infrastructure, compute, storage, DevOps, automation and security. You will play a key role in infrastructure modernisation, cloud adoption, automation and operational resilience, while providing technical leadership across engineering and infrastructure teams.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud & Infrastructure Architecture

  • Design secure, scalable and highly available multi-cloud and hybrid architectures, with strong AWS expertise.
  • Define infrastructure architecture standards, frameworks and best practices across cloud, network, compute, storage and security.
  • Lead cloud migration, adoption and infrastructure modernisation initiatives.
  • Architect containerised and serverless environments using Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, Lambda and Step Functions.

Network Architecture

  • Design and optimise enterprise and cloud networking across VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPN, load balancing, WAF, routing and network segmentation.
  • Provide architectural guidance across LAN/WAN, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, IPAM and network security.
  • Ensure robust integration between on-premise and cloud environments.

Compute, Virtualisation & Storage

  • Design and oversee enterprise compute platforms including VMware, Hyper-V, EC2 and bare-metal infrastructure.
  • Develop scalable storage, backup, archival and disaster recovery architectures across SAN/NAS and object storage.
  • Drive performance optimisation, capacity planning and infrastructure hardening.

DevOps & Automation

  • Lead the design and implementation of CI/CD pipelines, with GitLab preferred.
  • Drive infrastructure automation using Terraform, CloudFormation and Ansible.
  • Champion DevOps/SRE practices including observability, monitoring, incident management and reliability engineering.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration and policy enforcement.

Security & Governance

  • Embed security controls across cloud and infrastructure environments, including IAM, KMS, encryption, SIEM and security baselines.
  • Partner with security teams on Zero Trust, identity governance, compliance and audit readiness.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure, architecture and production issues.
  • Mentor cloud, infrastructure, DevOps and operations engineers.
  • Collaborate closely with application, network, security and engineering teams.
  • Produce architecture documentation and communicate technical solutions to senior stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of overall IT infrastructure experience, with 5+ years in cloud architecture and DevOps.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in AWS; Azure or GCP exposure is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise networking, including routing, VPN, firewalls, load balancing, DNS and cloud networking.
  • Experience with VMware/virtualisation, enterprise storage, backup and disaster recovery.
  • Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes and AWS EKS.
  • Experience with CI/CD, GitOps and release automation.
  • Strong Infrastructure-as-Code experience, particularly Terraform, with CloudFormation or Ansible advantageous.
  • Scripting/programming experience with Python, Bash or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of cloud monitoring and observability tools such as CloudWatch, CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs and OpenTelemetry.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM, KMS, encryption and network security.

Certifications

  • AWS Solutions Architect – Professional preferred; Associate certification considered for candidates progressing towards Professional.
  • Additional certifications in Azure, GCP, Kubernetes or Cyber Security are advantageous.

Preferred Experience

  • Designing and managing hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Designing DR/BCP strategies for mission-critical systems.
  • Leading large-scale infrastructure modernisation and cloud transformation programmes.
  • Experience within financial services or other highly regulated environments.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and technical presentation skills.
