1. Infrastructure Architecture and Design
- Design and review infrastructure architectures for large-scale Internet services.
- Develop infrastructure designs covering compute, virtualization, networking, storage, operating systems and supporting infrastructure services.
- Design private virtualization and NFV environments for production Internet services.
- Define redundancy, fault tolerance and appropriate failure domains.
- Review infrastructure sizing, capacity, scalability and performance requirements.
- Ensure infrastructure designs support required service availability and performance objectives.
- Develop and maintain reference architectures and proven infrastructure design patterns.
2. Resilience and High Availability
- Provide specialist expertise for services requiring continuous 24×7 operation.
- Design systems to eliminate or minimize single points of failure.
- Review high-availability, clustering and redundancy architectures.
- Assess infrastructure and component failure scenarios and their potential service impact.
- Review backup, restoration and disaster recovery strategies.
- Define appropriate recovery and service continuity approaches.
- Design and review infrastructure for stringent service availability requirements, including Five Nines (99.999%) availability where applicable.
- Ensure resilience considerations cover technology, operational processes and realistic failure scenarios.
3. Scalability and Performance
- Provide infrastructure expertise for platforms supporting large subscriber populations and high service loads.
- Conduct capacity and growth planning.
- Define appropriate horizontal and vertical scaling strategies.
- Review infrastructure performance and resource utilization.
- Identify potential system and network bottlenecks.
- Review service dependencies and their impact on scalability and availability.
- Define appropriate monitoring and observability requirements.
- Ensure infrastructure can be expanded or upgraded while minimizing impact to production services.
4. Solution Design Assurance
- Participate in Service Excellence technical governance for significant, complex or high-risk ISS projects.
- Review proposed solution architectures and infrastructure designs.
- Validate technical assumptions and dependencies.
- Identify architecture, resilience, scalability, security and operational risks.
- Assess whether proposed designs are practical to implement, operate and support.
- Review complex or non-standard infrastructure designs.
- Challenge technical assumptions constructively and recommend alternative approaches where appropriate.
- Verify that important operational considerations have been addressed before implementation.
Requirements:
- The Infrastructure Architect is expected to be a highly experienced technical professional with at least 10 years of relevant industry experience, including substantial practical involvement in:
- Infrastructure and solution architecture.
- Large-scale production system design.
- Implementation and commissioning.
- Infrastructure migration and transformation.
- High-availability systems.
- Production operations and troubleshooting.
- Performance and capacity engineering.
- Disaster recovery and service continuity.
- Major production incidents and root-cause analysis.
