Infrastructure Engineer
Summary
Hands-on network/infrastructure engineering roles at proprietary trading firms in Sydney: design, build and run low-latency infrastructure across co-location sites, exchange connectivity and internal environments — switching, routing, multicast market data, Linux servers, plus monitoring and Python automation.
I'm working with several prop trading firms in Sydney that are hiring experienced network and infrastructure engineers to design, build and run the low-latency infrastructure their trading depends on.
These are hands-on roles. You'll own the network and infrastructure across co-location sites, exchange connectivity and each firm's internal environment. That covers switching and routing, multicast market data, cross-connects and circuits, servers and hardware, and the monitoring and automation that keep everything running. Latency is measured in nanoseconds and downtime has a direct cost, so the engineering standard is high.
You'll work directly with traders, software engineers and SREs to design infrastructure that makes the trading faster and more reliable, and to troubleshoot problems in production when they happen.
Why these firms:
Some of the best engineers on the planet work at these firms. The hierarchies are flat and everyone is technical, from the top down. There are no layers of management to hide behind and no politics. If you're good, it's visible straight away.
You'll own your infrastructure end to end.
There are no external customers, no vendor-managed black boxes and no change board slowing everything down. The only customer is the trading business.
Technology budgets are effectively unlimited, so if the right switches, NICs, timing gear or tooling make the system faster or more reliable, you get it.
Compensation is market-leading, paid as base salary plus bonus, all in cash.
There's no diluted equity, no paper options and no waiting years for a liquidity event that may never come.
Relocation:
Full relocation and visa sponsorship are available for the right candidates. The firms are particularly interested in hearing from Australian expats looking to come home, and from anyone with a genuine reason to settle in Sydney.
What they're looking for:
Several years of hands-on network or infrastructure engineering in production environments. Strong networking fundamentals, including routing, switching, multicast, VLANs and Ethernet at a deep level. Strong Linux skills, including network configuration and performance tuning. Scripting and automation in Python or similar. Experience with low-latency networking, such as Arista or similar switching, co-location, exchange connectivity, PTP/time synchronisation or packet capture, is a strong advantage.
Above all, they want engineers who are rigorous and detail-oriented, take genuine ownership of infrastructure and respond with urgency when it matters.
These roles won't suit engineers whose experience is mainly cloud networking or enterprise IT, consultants, contractors or anyone with a run of short tenures.
They suit people who have built and run real physical networks where latency and uptime had direct consequences.
