Infrastructure Engineer

Discussion

Southern Cross is guided by purpose, powered by people and technology. We're here to help almost one million members across Aotearoa New Zealand live well for longer - work with real scale, real responsibility, and a real opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

As we accelerate our shift to a cloud-first, Azure-based technology estate, we're building a modern Infrastructure Platforms team to keep our on-premises and cloud environments reliable, secure and future-ready. We're looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to help drive that transformation.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who wants to bring automation-first, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) thinking to day-to-day infrastructure operations - improving how we monitor, provision and manage infrastructure across the estate.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Principal Infrastructure Engineer within our Infrastructure Platforms team, you'll help drive the transformation of Infrastructure Life Cycle Management - covering cloud, hypervisors, virtual appliances and hardware assets - while ensuring our systems maintain high availability, scalability and optimal performance.

You'll work across both cloud and on-premises environments: automating provisioning and deployment, improving monitoring and exploring self-healing solutions, and partnering with product and engineering teams to align infrastructure with delivery goals.

What you'll do

  • Help resolve and investigate incident and problem tickets by working with vendors and other support teams, and make improvements when needed

  • Ensure systems maintain high availability, scalability, and optimal performance

  • Automate the provisioning and deployment of infrastructure

  • Improve monitoring systems, explore self-healing solutions, and implement enhancements

  • Adhere to security best practices and compliance requirements

  • Document infrastructure processes and configurations thoroughly

  • Collaborate proactively with Value Streams and the broader Technology Team to mitigate risks associated with known vulnerabilities

  • Participate in the community of practice by sharing expertise and promoting consistency in policies and procedures

  • Demonstrate organisational values, achieve established KPIs, and adopt working methods that foster collaboration, accountability, and flexibility

What you'll bring

  • Demonstrated expertise in infrastructure engineering and systems administration.

  • Manage and maintain physical servers, storage systems and network devices, handling troubleshooting, upgrades and configuration changes.

  • Install, configure and patch Windows Server and Linux/Unix systems, keeping them secure and supportable

  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable and reliable infrastructure solutions, both on-premises and cloud-based

  • Advantageous: EUC environments including desktop virtualisation solutions (Microsoft AVD / W365, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops), and endpoint management

  • Advantageous: Azure networking services, such as Front Door, Application Gateway (WAF), Traffic Manager, Load Balancers, Virtual Networks (VNets), Private Endpoints, or comparable technologies

  • Experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation

  • Knowledge of containerisation technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes

  • An Agile mindset - flexible, curious, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement

  • Behavioral strengths including collaboration, self-awareness, accountability, openness to feedback, and a positive approach to change
