About the Position

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Florida, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), invites applications for a full-time (12-month) instructional faculty position supporting the undergraduate Interpreter Training Program and the American Sign Language course sequence.

In accordance with USF’s instructional faculty career paths, candidates without a doctoral degree who hold an appropriate master’s degree may be considered for appointment in the Instructor series at the Assistant Instructor, Associate Instructor or Senior Instructor rank. Candidates with an earned doctoral degree relevant to the teaching assignment may be considered for appointment in the Professor of Instruction series at the Assistant Professor of Instruction, Associate Professor of Instruction, or Professor of Instruction rank. Appointment rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s degree, qualifications, experience, and record of accomplishment.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in interpreter theory, interpreting practice (including practicum or internship), and ASL; and participate in service to the department, college, university, community, and profession. Depending on the level of experience, the successful candidate may also assume a leadership role as program director. The position requires a record of effective university-level teaching, substantial professional interpreting experience, commitment to student success, adherence to professional standards in interpreting, and engagement with students, Deaf communities, and professional partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education: An earned master’s degree in interpreting, interpreter education, Deaf education, Deaf studies, ASL, linguistics, communication sciences and disorders, education, or a closely related field is required for appointment in the Instructor series; an earned doctoral degree in one of these fields or a closely related field is required for appointment in the Professor of Instruction series. Rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
2. National certification: National interpreting certification such as RID, NAD-IV or higher, or BEI-Master or higher.
3. Professional interpreting experience: At least five years of professional interpreting experience.
4. Teaching experience: At least three years of high school, college-, or university-level teaching experience in an ASL or interpreting program, with a demonstrated range of coursework.
5. Student and intern evaluation: Demonstrated experience evaluating interpreting students and interns.
6. ASL fluency: Native or near-native fluency in ASL

Preferred Qualifications:

• Teaching experience: More than five years of college- or university-level teaching experience in interpreter education
• Program and curriculum experience: Experience in curriculum development, student assessment, program improvement, or fieldwork and internship coordination.
• Instructional effectiveness: Evidence of sustained instructional effectiveness.
• Course delivery: Experience teaching online, hybrid, or technology-supported courses.
• Specialized interpreting: Experience in trilingual interpreting (Spanish, ASL, and English), oral transliteration, or other specialized interpreting settings.
• Certification: ASLTA certification
• Program leadership: Demonstrated leadership of an interpreting program.
• Community and professional engagement: Demonstrated effectiveness working with students, Deaf communities, and professional partners.
• Advanced qualifications: Progressively advanced instructional leadership, program contributions, and professional service appropriate to the proposed rank.
