Intake Specialist - 1st shift
Who We Are
Mel Trotter Ministries is a faith-based, nonprofit organization committed to providing safe shelter and supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness. We work to create a structured, respectful environment where each person is treated with dignity and care.
Our approach is rooted in compassion, consistency, and accountability, with a focus on meeting immediate needs while supporting long-term stability. Through collaboration and a shared sense of purpose, our team works each day to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.
What You’ll Do
As an Intake Specialist – 1st shift, you’re the first friendly face guests, visitors, vendors, and teammates meet at Mel Trotter Ministries. This role exists to create a warm, orderly entry experience while supporting safety, clear communication, and quick connections to help.
Key responsibilities include welcoming and guiding arrivals, coordinating closely with Triage Specialists and Case Managers, monitoring the entry area and building perimeter for safety, helping keep shared spaces tidy and ready for use, and completing accurate shift documentation in a digital reporting system.
Required qualifications/skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred (not required)
- Experience in residential care, counseling, or crisis intervention preferred (not required)
How Your Day Flows
You’ll be onsite in Grand Rapids for four back-to-back 10-hour shifts (weekends included), then enjoy three solid days off. Your shift kicks off at the entry—welcoming arrivals, answering quick questions, and keeping the front end calm and orderly. Throughout the day you’ll make rounds, do perimeter checks, watch cameras, and keep an ear on radio traffic. When tensions pop up, you’ll lean on trauma-informed, non-physical de-escalation and loop in medical or law enforcement when needed. You’ll also help keep guest spaces (storage, showers, heat treat) clean and ready, support the Clinic/Sobering Center/Detox rooms as requested, and wrap up with timely notes in the reporting system.
