Integration Engineer
Summary
Builds and operates integrations and automations connecting a credit union's core, ancillary, and SaaS systems, exposing them as governed, least-privilege services. Daily work uses Python, REST/SOAP APIs, an iPaaS, and AWS (Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions), with a security-first approach for a regulated financial institution.
About the Role
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and maintain integrations using our iPaaS platform, REST and SOAP APIs, webhooks, event-driven patterns, and AWS services (e.g., Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions)
- Build and maintain API wrappers and connectors, with accurate specifications and documentation
- Choose the right approach for each opportunity (deterministic integration, conventional code, or a change to a human process) and document your rationale
- Establish how integrations authenticate and what they are permitted to do, including scoped IAM permissions, credential vaulting, and rotation
- Define controls and action boundaries for every integration, and treat all external data as untrusted input
- Build automated test suites and track error, latency, and failure metrics
- Instrument integrations with logging, monitoring, alerting, and runbooks so every action can be reconstructed for troubleshooting, audit, and regulatory examination
- Maintain the technical inventory of integrations, automated processes, and APIs, and retire what is unused or superseded
- Work with Information Security, Risk, and Compliance to review integrations before production release, including member data handling and third-party and open-source components
- Keep all code in source control with peer review, testing, and CI/CD, and document architecture and reusable patterns so knowledge is shared
What You Bring
- 4–7 years of experience building and operating production software, integrations, or automation, with strong hands-on Python
- Demonstrated experience integrating systems through REST APIs, including authentication patterns (e.g., OAuth 2.0, JWT, API keys), error handling, retries, idempotency, and rate limiting
- Experience deploying and supporting workloads in AWS
- Experience with version control, peer code review, automated testing, and CI/CD practices
- Working knowledge of SQL, AWS services for integration workloads, and containerization
- Sound judgment about what an automated process should and should not be permitted to do
- A security-first mindset, with default assumptions of least privilege and untrusted input
- Ability to explain the capabilities and limits of automation honestly to non-technical stakeholders, including recommending against automation when that is the right answer
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent demonstrated experience and a reviewable portfolio of built work will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Strongly Preferred
- Financial services or credit union experience
- Administration and development on an iPaaS platform
- Event-driven architecture on AWS (e.g., SQS, SNS) and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform)
- Experience with test automation, logging, and monitoring tooling
- Identity and secrets management (e.g., Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Amazon Cognito, AWS Secrets Manager) and API gateway patterns
- Familiarity with NCUA expectations and GLBA and nonpublic personal information handling
