Interior Designer
SMMA is seeking an experienced Interior Designer for our growing team. We're looking for someone who is energized by great work, passionate about the details, and ready for the opportunity to take on more creative ownership and see their ideas come to life.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about design, human experience, and the built environment, and who is eager to grow both intellectually and creatively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. You'll work alongside talented architects, designers, and engineers on complex projects while having the opportunity to grow your design skills, client presence, and influence.
Essential Job Functions:
Design
- Lead and contribute to the development of interior design concepts from programming through documentation and construction.
- Bring strong design thinking, creativity, and a point of view to projects.
- Develop design concepts and translate them into compelling presentations and cohesive interior environments.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other disciplines to integrate interior design with the overall project.
- Respond thoughtfully to the technical implications of design decisions.
- Help ensure a high level of design quality throughout all phases of a project.
- Promote SMMA’s commitment to design excellence, sustainability, and the human experience.
Project & Client Engagement
- Participate in client meetings and presentations, building confidence and experience in client-facing roles.
- Communicate design ideas clearly and effectively to clients and project teams.
- Take ownership of design assignments and follow them through to completion.
- Collaborate with Project Directors and Project Managers to meet project goals, schedules, and budgets.
- Develop an understanding of project priorities and proactively identify opportunities and challenges.
Technical
- Apply knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, and industry standards to design solutions.
- Coordinate interior design with architectural and engineering disciplines and outside consultants.
- Develop interior design documentation, specifications, and details appropriate to the project phase.
- Contribute to the technical development and quality of project documentation.
Practice & Professional Growth
- Contribute to marketing and business development efforts, including interviews, presentations, and pursuit teams.
- Build relationships with clients, industry partners, and colleagues.
- Participate in professional organizations and industry events that support SMMA’s visibility and relationships.
- Share knowledge and ideas with other designers and contribute to the growth of the Interior Design team.
- Seek opportunities to expand design, technical, leadership, and client relationship skills.
Essential Job Requirements:
Education
- Professional degree from a CIDA-accredited Interior Design program or related accredited discipline.
Experience
- Professional interior design experience, preferably in corporate interiors, higher education, life sciences, workplace, or related project environments.
- Strong and compelling design portfolio demonstrating creativity, design thinking, and a high level of design talent.
- Demonstrated experience taking projects or significant portions of projects from concept through documentation and/or construction.
- Strong understanding of interior design principles, materials, finishes, furniture, and detailing.
- Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility, and industry standards.
- Experience coordinating with architecture, engineering, and other consultants.
- Proficiency in Revit, SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and graphic communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and enthusiasm for design.
- A desire to take on greater responsibility and continue developing as a designer and emerging leader.
- NCIDQ certification or progress toward certification preferred.

The approximate pay range for this position is $80,000 - $115,000.
Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications.
