Intermediate QA Engineer – Embedded, Hardware & Software
Summary
Intermediate QA engineer testing full-stack products — application software, touchscreen UIs, firmware and the underlying hardware — for a Kiwi maker of embedded touchscreens and computers used in security, fire safety and building automation. Day to day: manual and automated testing (Selenium, Postman, Python), hardware-in-the-loop rigs, and AI-assisted test tooling.
About us
We're a growing Kiwi tech company that designs and builds the touchscreens, embedded computers and software inside security, fire safety, building automation and professional AV systems. You won't see our name on them, but our products are installed in buildings around the world and trusted by some of the biggest brands in those industries.
Everything we make has to run reliably for a decade or more, in places where failure isn't an option. That makes quality engineering central to what we do. We're now building our own product platform and scaling up, so we're growing the QA team to match.

The role
As an Intermediate QA Engineer, you'll be a hands-on member of our Quality Engineering team, reporting to the Head of Quality Engineering. You'll test across the whole product: application software, touchscreen UIs, firmware and the hardware underneath.
Some days you'll be writing automation. Other days you'll be at the bench with a hardware-in-the-loop rig, working through a boot issue with our hardware engineers. You'll own your assigned scope, with Senior QA Engineers on hand for strategy and the harder problems.
What you'll do
Design and run manual and automated tests across software, firmware and hardware
Write and maintain automation for web and API layers, and help extend it to on-device UI and embedded testing
Help build and use hardware-in-the-loop rigs, jigs and instrumented benches that bring manual hardware checks under automation
Run functional, boot and soak/stability testing on target hardware
Review requirements and specs, and flag gaps early
Log clear, reproducible defects and work with developers to resolve them
Use AI tools such as Claude to generate test cases, write automation and triage logs, and check what they produce
Contribute tests to our CI/CD pipeline
What you'll bring
A few years of commercial experience in both manual and automated software testing
Proven commercial experience with Selenium, Postman and Agile delivery
Test experience across at least two of web, Android, iOS or embedded software
Scripting skills in Python or a similar language
Some real practice using AI tools in your testing work
The ability to plan and run your own work, and to know when to escalate
A degree in Computer Science, IT or a related field, or equivalent commercial experience
Bonus points for
Hardware test experience with PCBs and components, or with hardware-in-the-loop rigs
IoT experience, or a background in the security, fire or building automation industries
On-device UI automation (Espresso, UI Automator, Appium)
Embedded C/C++ test frameworks (GoogleTest, Catch2, Unity, Ceedling)
CI/CD experience, e.g. Jenkins
ISTQB or an equivalent certification
You don't need to be a hardware engineer. You do need to want to learn how the board works, how the silicon boots and why a rail sags. On our products, you can't test the software well without understanding the hardware under it.
Why join us
Test physical products that are installed in buildings around the world
A mix of software, embedded and hardware testing, not just one layer
A team that's investing in automation and AI-assisted testing
Room to grow as we scale
Hybrid working from our Auckland office
