Intermediate/Senior Full Stack Software Engineer

Our client is building a real-time financial operating system that helps Kiwi business owners understand what they can actually afford to spend after tax obligations are accounted for.

The platform connects directly with banks through Open Banking and with Inland Revenue, bringing financial data together to give business owners and their advisors greater real-time certainty.

The company combines automation, AI and human expertise to remove repetitive financial work while keeping people in control where judgement matters.

About the Role
This is one core engineering role with flexibility around level. Depending on your experience, you could join as an Intermediate or Senior Full Stack Software Engineer.

You’ll work across the stack and own features from understanding the customer problem through design, build, release and running them in production. Expect to work on third-party and Open Banking integrations, financial data pipelines, platform growth and the services that keep production healthy.

The stack includes Python/FastAPI, PostgreSQL and Redis, with Jinja moving toward TanStack/React. Infrastructure is containerised and self-hosted in New Zealand.

Skills & Experience
You’ll bring:

• 3+ years’ experience building and shipping production software, ideally across the stack
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including design, data modelling and problem-solving
• Experience integrating with third-party APIs and handling real-world issues such as authentication, rate limits, retries, failures and inconsistent data
• Confidence with relational databases and SQL
• Exposure to containers, CI/CD and deploying and operating the software you build
• An understanding of application security and the judgement to critically review AI-generated code
• A product mindset, genuine interest in customer problems and clear written communication

For Senior-level candidates, the team will look for deeper experience in software architecture and system design, solving difficult problems and making technical trade-offs under ambiguity, and building systems through periods of scale or growth.

You’ll also be expected to bring stronger production ownership across deployment, monitoring and reliability, alongside experience mentoring engineers or helping raise engineering standards.

Experience with Open Banking, IRD, payments, accounting or other financial integrations, data pipelines, React, self-hosted infrastructure or early-stage startups is useful, but not essential.
