Salary: Solid salary and perks
About the OpportunityA large, well-established Auckland organisation is building a new in-house software engineering practice around AI-accelerated delivery. Engineers work in small squads of a Product Owner, a Tech Lead and 3-4 engineers, shipping production software quickly without lowering the quality bar. This is a permanent role with hybrid working, at a time when you can help shape how the practice works. The squad builds primarily in TypeScript and Node.js.
The Role
As an Intermediate Software Engineer, you'll deliver features end to end on your own, with technical direction from your Squad Tech Lead and line management from the Squad Product Owner. You'll use AI coding tools confidently within agreed guardrails, check everything they produce carefully, and support junior engineers and interns. Your design responsibility will grow over time, and there's a clear path toward the Squad Tech Lead role.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver features end to end to the definition of done: designed, built, tested, reviewed and production-ready
- Design implementations within the squad's agreed architecture, raising design concerns, risks and blockers early
- Use AI coding tools well: write precise specifications, review critically, and verify everything that ships
- Choose the right approach for each piece of work, from hand-written code to agent-generated builds
- Ship tested, secure and observable code, and lead debugging of complex faults down to the root cause
- Review your teammates' work constructively, including AI-generated code
- Guide junior engineers and interns through pairing, review and everyday support
- Take an active part in squad ceremonies, retrospectives, and improving the squad's prompts and AI practices
- 2-5 years' professional software development experience, including taking production features from start to finish
- Strong commercial experience with TypeScript and Node.js, or a similar modern web stack, with the fundamentals to pick up other tools as needed
- Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot), and good judgement about when not to use them
- Solid debugging and root-cause analysis across code, data and integrations
- Experience with Git, CI/CD and automated testing
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, Cloudflare) and how production systems are deployed and run
- You build security in from the start and care about usability and accessibility
- You give and take code review constructively and communicate clearly
- A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience in a highly regulated environment such as banking, financial services or healthcare would be a plus
- You'll need to be able to pass pre-employment and regulatory probity checks
