Why this job matters:
The Business Systems Analyst Intern supports Product Managers and cross-functional delivery teams at BCBSRI while developing practical experience in business and systems analysis. Working under the guidance of experienced team members, the intern helps organize and document project and product intake, analyze current systems and processes, prepare roadmap and prioritization materials, track dependencies and decisions, and maintain product and delivery documentation.
This developmental role provides exposure to healthcare technology, product planning, intake and prioritization, roadmap management, process improvement, system integrations, testing, and release activities. Assignments are structured to build analytical, communication, and technical skills while contributing meaningful work to active product initiatives. The intern is not expected to independently make product-priority decisions, own strategic roadmaps, approve complex requirements, or lead production-critical activities.
What you will do:
- Develop foundational business analysis and requirements-management skills in a regulated healthcare environment.
- Learn how Product Managers evaluate requests, define problems and outcomes, prioritize opportunities, and translate product strategy into roadmaps and actionable work.
- Build practical experience with Agile ceremonies, current-state and future-state process modeling, system workflow documentation, data analysis, testing, and change-impact analysis.
- Improve communication and collaboration skills across product, business, engineering, architecture, and QA teams.
- Assist with stakeholder interviews, discovery sessions, and requirements workshops by preparing materials, capturing notes, and documenting follow-up items.
- Assist Product Managers with project and product intake by gathering request information, documenting the business problem, affected users, expected outcomes, urgency, assumptions, dependencies, risks, and supporting evidence for review.
- Help prepare intake-review and prioritization materials by consolidating data, clarifying missing information, tracking open questions, and organizing requests against agreed evaluation criteria.
- Support Product Managers in creating and maintaining product roadmaps, initiative summaries, milestone views, dependency maps, and status updates that connect planned work to product goals and expected outcomes.
- Assist with roadmap and portfolio reviews by preparing meeting materials, recording decisions, documenting sequencing changes, and following up on actions, risks, and dependencies.
- Help maintain product documentation, including product goals, outcome measures, initiative records, prioritization decisions, assumptions, decision logs, and stakeholder communications.
- Analyze and document current-state business processes, existing systems, system workflows, system interactions, business rules, and data movement to establish a clear baseline and identify gaps, redundancies, dependencies, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Assist with developing future-state process models, system workflow diagrams, and other visual documentation that describe proposed changes and support stakeholder review, requirements validation, and solution design.
- Compare current-state and future-state models to document process changes, expected benefits, impacts to people and systems, assumptions, dependencies, and open questions for review by experienced team members.
- Support the transition of prioritized initiatives into delivery by organizing supporting requirements, process documentation, decisions, dependencies, and open questions; assist with user stories and acceptance criteria when needed.
- Assist with impact analysis by documenting system dependencies, risks, assumptions, and traceability under the direction of a Business Systems Analyst, Product Owner, or Product Manager.
- Use SQL, with appropriate supervision and access controls, to support basic data queries, validation, and source-to-target mapping activities.
- Create and maintain documentation such as intake records, product and process diagrams, roadmap support materials, data mappings, requirements logs, decision records, meeting notes, and test-support materials.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Product Owners, business partners, engineering, architecture, and QA to understand how opportunities move from intake and analysis through prioritization, roadmap planning, delivery, and outcome measurement.
- Support testing and release-readiness activities by drafting test scenarios, assisting with user acceptance testing, documenting defects, and validating expected outcomes.
- Follow BCBSRI policies, security standards, and regulatory requirements, including expectations related to HIPAA, CMS, BCBSA, and the appropriate handling of sensitive information.
- Complete assigned learning activities, participate in coaching and feedback sessions, and present a summary of completed work or lessons learned at the end of the assignment.
- Perform other duties and developmental assignments as directed.
What you need to succeed:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, Data Analytics, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
- Foundational analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, with curiosity and a willingness to ask questions.
- Ability to organize information and communicate ideas clearly in writing, conversation, diagrams, and presentations.
- Ability or willingness to learn how to create current-state and future-state process flows using Microsoft Visio or similar diagramming tools and established process-modeling conventions.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook; willingness to learn Visio, Azure DevOps, and other enterprise tools.
- Introductory knowledge of databases or SQL, or willingness to develop these skills during the assignment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with people from different business and technical backgrounds and respond constructively to coaching and feedback.
- Ability to manage assigned tasks, meet agreed deadlines, protect confidential information, and escalate questions or risks promptly.
- Commitment to BCBSRI values, inclusive teamwork, and professional conduct.
The extras:
- Interest in healthcare, health insurance, digital products, enterprise technology, or regulated industries.
- Exposure to product management, project or product intake, roadmaps, prioritization, Agile or Scrum practices, process mapping, software development lifecycles, or related concepts through coursework or projects.
- Introductory experience with SQL, Microsoft Visio or similar diagramming tools, Azure DevOps or another work-management platform, APIs, cloud platforms, or Salesforce.
- Familiarity with data privacy, information security, HIPAA, or healthcare payer concepts is a plus.
