Job Description

We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong development skills to join the IT Trading & Treasury team of a leading private bank, supporting mission-critical front-office systems used daily by a trading room of around 50 traders.

You will own the technical delivery and operational support of our Order Management, Pricing and Position Keeping platforms across asset classes — securities, derivatives and structured products — as well as the in-house applications we build to close gaps around them.

This is a hands-on engineering role. You will design and write code, customise vendor platforms, integrate systems front-to-back, and keep production running. The environment is technically rich and highly integrated: order flow, market data, pricing, risk and core banking all connect through the platforms you will own.

What makes this role different

You are not maintaining one system in isolation. You will work across the full stack — database, application server, integration layer, front end — and across the full lifecycle, from a trader's request to production release.

Vendor platforms (FrontArena, Ullink, FinIQ) are part of the landscape, but so is genuine in-house development. Prior vendor experience is welcome; engineering ability and financial-product curiosity matter more.

Main Responsibilities

Build & Change

  • Develop, customise and maintain components across the order management, pricing and position keeping platforms, to support new business requirements and platform evolution.
  • Design and build in-house applications for the trading desk — integration layers, reporting tools, automation and health-check utilities — where the vendor platforms do not cover the need.
  • Deliver enhancements and full project phases end-to-end: analysis, technical design, development, testing, deployment and documentation.
  • Work front-to-back across the technology stack, working across databases (Oracle, MS SQL), application servers (Windows, Linux) and front-end components.

Integrate

  • Manage and troubleshoot FIX protocol connectivity towards brokers, exchanges and execution venues — session configuration, message flow analysis, troubleshooting.
  • Build and maintain integrations between trading platforms, market data providers, the core banking system and downstream risk and back-office systems.
  • Ensure data consistency across systems with different data models and formats, and design the mapping and reconciliation logic.

Run

  • Provide L2/L3 application support across trading workflows, from intraday incidents to root-cause analysis and permanent fixes.
  • Act as technical escalation point of complex issues, coordinating with external vendors and other IT teams (infrastructure, database, network, core banking) to resolve them.
  • Manage incidents with the trading desk with clear communication on impact and expected resolution time — and write the post-mortem when it matters.

Collaborate

  • Work directly with traders, Market Risk and Operations to translate business needs into technical solutions, and to challenge requirements where a better technical answer exists.
  • Partner with internal IT teams in a small, senior team where technical decisions are discussed openly and ownership is real.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • 3–8 years of experience in application development and/or application support within financial services IT.
  • Solid development skills in Java and/or Python — you write production code, not only scripts.
  • Very good knowledge of SQL and relational database systems (Oracle, MS SQL), including the ability to read and optimise queries; familiarity with application servers (Windows mainly, Linux).
  • Understandingof financial products, related workflows and pricing concepts: mark-to-market and valuation logic, volatility and market data inputs, P&L attribution — sufficient to reason about pricing behaviour and diagnose pricing issues
  • Ability to read and navigate an existing codebase, diagnose issues and deliver clean, maintainable solutions.
  • Fluent English; Italian is a strong advantage for the Lugano location; French is a plus.
  • University degree in computer science, engineering, finance or an equivalent background.

Strongly valued

  • Knowledge of the FIX protocol — experience configuring or troubleshooting FIX sessions is a significant plus.
  • Exposure to securities trading workflows (equities, fixed income), derivatives or structured products.
  • Experience with vendor front-office platforms — FrontArena, Ullink, FinIQ or comparable OMS/pricing systems.
  • Familiarity with Powershell or shell scripting, CI/CD, version control, environment management (dev / UAT / production).

Ways of working

  • Composure under pressure: trading systems fail at the worst possible moment, and you keep a clear head when they do.
  • Technical curiosity and proactivity — you identify the better technical answer rather than waiting to be told what to build.
  • Communication across audiences: you will explain a technical constraint to a trader and a business constraint to a developer.
  • Flexibility: occasional shift work, and support during bank holidays or Saturdays for releases and critical activities.
  • Team orientation in a small team where colleagues cover for each other.

What We Offer

  • A technically rich environment with real ownership of critical front-office systems — your work is visible on the trading floor the day it goes live.
  • Exposure to both run and change: you will build new systems and keep existing ones running, rather than being confined to one or the other.
  • Deep financial-product knowledge built on the job, across securities, derivatives and structured products, alongside traders and Market Risk.
  • Formal vendor and domain training on trading platforms and financial products for the right candidate.
  • A collaborative team with senior colleagues to learn from and genuine influence on technical decisions.

Our Values

  • Accountability: Taking ownership for tasks and challenges, as well as seeking continuous improvement
  • Hands-on: Being proactive to rapidly deliver high-quality results
  • Passionate: Being committed and striving for excellence
  • Solution-driven: Focusing on client outcomes and treating clients fairly with a risk-aware mindset
  • Partnership-oriented: Promoting collaboration and teamwork. Working together with an entrepreneurial spirit.
