IT Chapter Lead - Backend

As a Chapter Lead Engineer, you’ll influence both how we build technology and how engineers grow, while working on platforms that power customer communication across multiple countries.

The team

You’ll join Global Assisted Platforms, a domain within ING Tech responsible for building and running mission‑critical platforms that enable assisted customer journeys worldwide.

Your chapter consists of experienced backend engineers working on large‑scale Java‑based API platforms such as CC 2.0 and IRIS, supporting customer interactions across more than eight countries. The culture is collaborative, pragmatic, and engineering‑driven, with a strong focus on reliability, continuous improvement, and ownership.

Alongside your chapter responsibilities, you’ll be an active member of a platform squad, contributing hands‑on to the evolution of foundational technology and bank‑wide initiatives, including Generative and Conversational AI.

Roles and responsibilities

In this role, you combine technical leadership with people development to ensure sustainable, high‑quality delivery.

• Lead and develop a chapter of senior backend engineers, fostering craftsmanship, ownership, and professional growth
• Set and uphold engineering standards for Java‑based, API‑driven distributed systems
• Take accountability for chapter health, skills development, capacity planning, and succession
• Drive engineering excellence across build and run, with strong focus on availability, resilience, security, and performance
• Partner closely with Product Tech Leads, Product Owners, and IT Area leadership on strategy and platform evolution
• Contribute actively to large‑scale initiatives such as platform modernisation, ICHP adoption, and legacy decommissioning
