Build software that keeps media moving
Enjoy solving practical problems, building useful software and seeing your work make a difference?
Allied Media is looking for an intermediate IT Software Engineer to help develop and support the systems behind our publishing and digital operations. From Python applications and automated workflows to websites and system integrations, you’ll work on a varied mix of new development and improvements to existing systems.
About Allied Media
Based in Dunedin, Allied Media is a South Island media company with daily and community newspapers, magazines, websites, digital products and commercial print operations. Our regional teams connect communities through quality journalism and effective advertising solutions.
Creative, collaborative and accountable are the values that guide our work.
About the role
Reporting to the Chief Information Technology Officer, you’ll deliver well-scoped work independently while collaborating with the IT team, colleagues across the business and external technology partners. This is a hands-on role combining development, problem-solving and application support.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain Python applications, developing in Python 3 and supporting legacy Python 2 systems.
- Develop and improve websites, internal tools and digital products using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and server-side technologies including PHP and Express.js.
- Connect systems through REST APIs, data feeds, SQL databases and automated workflows.
- Investigate and resolve production issues across Linux, web, application and database environments.
- Write secure, maintainable code, with practical testing, peer review, documentation and safe release practices.
- Work with colleagues to understand business needs, simplify processes and reduce technical debt.
This is a full-time role based in Dunedin, working 40 hours per week. As our publishing operations run across extended hours, occasional flexibility is required for planned after-hours releases or priority incidents.
About you
You’re a methodical problem-solver who enjoys understanding how systems work and making them better. You can take ownership of your work, communicate clearly with non-technical colleagues and share knowledge with your team.
You'll bring
- Practical software-development experience at an intermediate level, with experience taking responsibility for production code or supported applications.
- Strong Python skills, covering Python 3 development and legacy Python 2 maintenance, dependency management, logging, error handling and automated testing.
- Hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, REST APIs and structured data such as JSON, XML or RSS.
- Practical SQL and relational database skills, and confidence working with Linux, shell tools, scheduled jobs and service logs.
- Experience using Git and peer-review workflows, with a sound understanding of secure coding, authentication and secrets handling.
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical software-development experience.
- A full New Zealand driver licence, or the ability to obtain one where travel is required.
Useful extras, rather than essentials
Experience with PHP, WordPress or Drupal; Node.js and Express.js; Azure; Cloudflare; Ansible; C#/.NET; or CI/CD, containers and infrastructure-as-code.
Experience in media, publishing, subscriptions, advertising technology or another deadline-driven environment would also be valuable, as would familiarity with platforms such as Piano, Atex ACE or PressReader.
Why this role?
This is a role with genuine variety. You'll work across business applications, public-facing websites, integrations and automation, improving established systems while also building new solutions.
You'll see the practical impact of your work across editorial, advertising, circulation and production, helping a South Island media business keep its services running and its communities connected.
