Java Backend Developer
Job Description
You'll work on Clear's global e-invoicing platform—a suite of Java/Spring Boot services that generate, validate, route, and exchange tax-compliant invoices across multiple countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Belgium, UAE, and the expanding EU/Peppol ecosystem.
The backend handles government-format mapping, network routing to tax-authority APIs, and Peppol four-corner document exchange. It is an event-driven, workflow-orchestrated platform built as Maven multi-module services.
This is an individual contributor role for an experienced backend engineer who can quickly understand an existing codebase and contribute independently. You'll own well-scoped features, resolve production issues, and deliver high-quality solutions while collaborating with senior engineers on larger technical initiatives.
What You'll Do
- Build and deliver backend features within existing Java/Spring Boot services.
- Understand and navigate a large, existing enterprise codebase.
- Diagnose and resolve production issues.
- Develop and maintain REST APIs.
- Implement unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
- Work across Maven multi-module services following established engineering patterns.
- Participate in code reviews and maintain high-quality Git/PR practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in a distributed agile environment.
- Contribute to continuous improvements in code quality, maintainability, and performance.
- 3–5 years of professional backend development experience using Java.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 11 or Java 17.
- Proven experience building microservices using Spring Boot.
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design and development.
- Experience working with MongoDB or similar databases.
- Experience navigating and maintaining large, existing codebases.
- Strong experience with Maven, Git, and automated testing using JUnit/Mockito.
- Ability to work independently and contribute with minimal onboarding.
- Strong communication skills and experience working in a remote, international team.
