Summary

Build, test, and maintain Java applications and services supporting the DHS/CBP TASPO/TASPD federal program — developing RESTful APIs, SQL data-access components, and automated tests within a small Agile team. Hybrid role in Northern Virginia; core stack is Java, SQL, Git, testing frameworks, and build pipelines.

Federal applications don't get rewritten every eighteen months. They get maintained, extended, and trusted — and somebody has to be good at that.

Sienna Systems is seeking a Java Developer to join a collaborative software development team supporting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) TASPO/TASPD program. This is a hybrid role based in Northern Virginia.

You will design, develop, test, and support Java applications and services alongside other developers, QA, product, and DevOps team members. The team is small enough that your work is visible and your technical opinion carries weight — you will contribute to architectural decisions, not just tickets assigned to you.

Why You'll Want This Role:

  • $125,000 – $135,000 based on experience
  • A long-running, stable DHS program
  • Real technical ownership: you will work independently on assigned projects and help set team standards
  • Small-company visibility on a large-agency program
  • 401(k) with 4% matching, immediate vesting, no restrictions
  • 3 weeks Paid Time Off plus 11 Federal Holidays
  • Hybrid schedule in Northern Virginia

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java applications and services.
  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and system integrations.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into reliable, maintainable software.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions.
  • Write unit and integration tests and help maintain automated testing.
  • Troubleshoot application defects, performance issues, and production problems.
  • Work with SQL databases to develop queries and data-access components.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum planning, estimation, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with QA, product, DevOps, and other developers throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of application quality, development processes, and team standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • US citizenship, and the ability to obtain and maintain a DHS/CBP background investigation. Work cannot begin until the investigation is adjudicated.
  • 4 or more years of professional Java development with a Bachelor's degree, or 7 years without a degree
  • Strong knowledge of current Java-centric tooling, including common design patterns and best practices
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational databases
  • Experience with Git, pull requests, branching strategies, and code reviews
  • Experience with typical testing frameworks — unit testing, mock objects
  • Experience with build pipeline and dependency management
  • Ability to diagnose issues using debugging, logging, monitoring, and performance-analysis tools
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and contribute to technical decisions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An active or recent DHS or CBP background investigation — strongly preferred
  • Prior experience supporting a federal software development program
  • RESTful API design and system integration experience in a multi-vendor environment
  • Experience in an Agile/Scrum delivery team

Salary: $125,000 – $135,000 based on experience
Job location: Hybrid — Northern Virginia

Company Benefits:

  • Medical/dental/vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan: 4% matching, immediate vesting, no restrictions
  • 3 weeks Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 11 Federal Holidays
  • Long- and short-term Disability coverage
  • Company-sponsored Life Insurance coverage
  • Hiring Referral Bonus
