Java Software Engineer
Summary
Intermediate Java developer (4-6 years) for a 12-month fixed-term contract building services on a large telecoms billing/operations (BSS) platform for a major South African operator, hybrid in Centurion. Core stack: Java/Spring, SQL across Oracle/MSSQL/MySQL/PostgreSQL, Docker/Kubernetes on Linux, and RabbitMQ/ActiveMQ messaging.
Ideally 4–6 years' experience
Hybrid schedule: 2 days in office, 3 days at home
THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is recruiting Intermediate Java Developers for a major BSS modernisation programme at one of South Africa’s largest telecommunications operators, delivered through an established international technology group.
This is business-critical, high-visibility systems work - the kind of programme that keeps earning its place on your CV long after the contract ends.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Build and maintain Java services on a large-scale telecoms billing and operations platform
- Write and optimise complex SQL across multiple database engines
- Deploy and support containerised services on Linux
- Integrate systems through message queues and enterprise integration patterns
- Facilitate FAT and UAT sessions directly with customer teams
- Deliver in a Scrum/Agile team working in Git
THE DETAILS
- 12-month fixed-term contract - contract, not permanent
- Preferred: 2 days a week at the offices in Centurion and 3 days at home
- All equipment, tools and licences provided
- Rate: market related, based on experience
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- A relevant IT qualification - BSc Computer Science, BSc IT or similar
- 4 to 6 years’ commercial Java development experience
- Strong Java, including J2EE and Spring
- Deep SQL: complex, optimised queries across MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Linux and Bash - scripting, server administration and deployments
- Docker and Kubernetes deployment experience
- Message queueing with RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ
- J2EE containers and web servers
- Testing exposure: FAT, UAT facilitation and Postman
A REAL ADVANTAGE
- Oracle PL/SQL and APEX
- Telecoms BSS/OSS background
- Basic HTML and CSS
