Jewellery Designer — Procreate (Digital Hand Rendering): Mumbai

Description

Jewellery Designer: Procreate (Digital Hand Rendering)
LocationMumbai (on-site)
Department: Design & Product Development
Reports to: Head of Product Development & Customer Orders / Directors
About the Role

Before a piece exists, someone has to make the customer see it. A rendering that shows how gold catches light, how a rosecut sits in its setting, how a suite looks together is what wins an approval, closes an order and fills a collection presentation. This role is that renderer.

You will design and illustrate jewellery in Procreate on iPad: concept sketches, finished renders, colourways, mood boards and collection presentations for customers, exhibitions and marketing.

Scope boundary: This is a concept and visualisation role. Technical 2D drawings with stone sizes, counts, weights and setting specifications are produced by the CorelDRAW designer, and 3D models by CAD. You hand over to them; you do not replace them.

Our range covers RUCOS, our rosecut diamond line, and the wider collection for export and domestic customers.

Key Responsibilities 1. Design and Rendering

  • Design original jewellery concepts and develop them from briefs, references, mood boards and management direction, covering rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, bangles and full suites.
  • Produce finished digital renders in Procreate that read as real jewellery:
    • Accurate metal tone and reflectivity for yellow, white and rose gold
    • Faceted and rosecut stone behaviour, and coloured stone depth
    • Pavé and closed-setting texture
    • Believable light, shadow and contact
  • Render the same design in multiple colourways, metal colours and stone options.
  • Build layered, reusable files (brushes, metal and stone swatches, component libraries) so the next render is faster than the last.
  • Sketch quickly and roughly when a concept needs to be seen in ten minutes, and render slowly and precisely when it is going to a customer.

2. Presentation and Collection Work

  • Build mood boards, concept boards and collection stories for new lines and customer pitches.
  • Lay out collection presentations and look books that hold together visually across twenty or fifty pieces.
  • Produce renders for exhibitions, catalogues, the website and social media, within brand guidelines on colour, type and layout.
  • Render pieces in context where it helps (on-hand, on-ear, scaled against the body) so the customer understands proportion.

3. Working with the Factory

  • Render to what can actually be made: understand casting, setting and finishing well enough that every concept you present is producible.
  • Hand over cleanly to the CorelDRAW designer and to CAD, with enough views, proportion and intent that nothing is guessed.
  • Review samples against your render and feed back on what came out differently and why.
  • Keep design files organised, with proper codes and versions, in the design library.

4. Speed and Turnaround

  • Turn around customer concept requests and revisions fast. A render that arrives a week late has usually lost the order.
  • Manage several live briefs at once, keeping each one visible and tracked.

Success Measures

  • Turnaround time per concept and per revision
  • Conversion: concepts presented that become samples, and samples that become orders
  • Accuracy of the render against the finished piece
  • Volume of new concepts generated per month
  • Quality and consistency of collection presentations

Requirements Must Have

  • 2–5 years designing jewellery, with a portfolio of digital hand-rendered work.
  • Expert command of Procreate on iPad: layers, brushes, blending, masking and custom brush building.
  • Strong traditional drawing and rendering fundamentals: perspective, form, light, material and metal rendering. Procreate is the tool; the eye is the requirement.
  • Understanding of jewellery construction, and of diamond and gemstone shapes, cuts and proportions.
  • Enough manufacturing awareness to avoid designing what cannot be made.
  • Ability to work to a brief, take direction and revise without losing the design.
  • Own iPad and Apple Pencil preferred; otherwise we will provide.

Good to Have

  • Experience with rosecut and closed-setting product.
  • CorelDRAW, Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign for technical drawings, catalogues and layout.
  • Awareness of 3D CAD (Rhino, Matrix, 3Design), not to model, but to hand over well.
  • Gouache or traditional hand-rendering training.
  • Experience preparing exhibition or look book material.

Education

Diploma or degree in jewellery design (IIGJ, NIFT, GIA, JD Institute or equivalent). A strong portfolio outweighs the qualification.

Who We Are Looking For

  • A real renderer. We will judge the portfolio on whether the gold looks like gold.
  • Fast on concepts, patient on finishes.
  • Open to feedback. Takes input from customers and management without getting precious about the drawing.
  • Curious about the floor. Walks down to setting to see why a design came out differently.
