Junior AI & Backend Developer

Salary: $15,000 – $20,000 per month

About the role

Magic is building a new generation of intelligent insurance technology, combining artificial intelligence, proprietary insurance data and automation to make insurance easier to understand, compare and purchase. You will work as a Junior AI & Backend Developer alongside an experienced Lead Full-Stack Developer, contributing to two exciting projects: a proprietary insurance pricing API engine and Magic's intelligent insurance assistant. This is an implementation-focused development role where you will implement assigned features, test your work, resolve issues and deliver against agreed requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Develop insurer-specific pricing APIs using supplied premium tables, product data and business rules.

• Build backend services to calculate and validate insurance premiums accurately.

• Help develop Magic's intelligent assistant using Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and AI integrations.

• Connect AI applications to databases, pricing APIs and verified insurance knowledge.

• Structure and process insurer product information, benefits, exclusions and eligibility rules.

• Write clean, maintainable code, automated tests and technical documentation.

• Debug issues, validate outputs and improve application reliability.

• Use AI coding tools to accelerate development, solve problems and improve productivity.

• Help build feedback analytics and testing systems to improve the assistant's performance over time.

About you

• Knowledge of Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript, with an understanding of backend development.

• Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, HTTP and API integrations.

• Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL.

• Understanding of Git, version control, debugging and software testing.

• Familiarity with LLMs, AI APIs, prompt engineering or RAG.

• Practical experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor or GitHub Copilot.

• Ability to review, understand, test and debug AI-generated code rather than relying on it blindly.

• Strong logical reasoning, attention to detail and an interest in data-driven applications.

• Self-motivated learner who enjoys solving technical problems and exploring new technologies.

• Ability to turn clearly defined requirements into working, tested software.
