Junior Backend Engineer

Summary

Junior backend engineer at a UK fintech startup building an AI-powered autonomous savings app; writes Java/Spring services on AWS, works with Kafka/event sourcing, and contributes to APIs and ledger systems.

A UK fintech building an AI-powered autonomous savings product - an app that automatically manages customers' money across accounts to help them earn a better return. The company is pre-launch, well-funded by seed investors, and building core financial infrastructure from the ground up.

The company is hiring a graduate/junior backend engineer to work alongside the CTO on the systems that power the product, the money-movement engine, ledger and APIs. The successful candidate will start on well-scoped, supervised backend work and grow into more responsibility as they prove themselves. Hands-on, with real mentorship and real impact: code reaches customers quickly.

What you'll do

  • Build and test backend services in Java/Spring on AWS.
  • Work with event-driven systems (Kafka, event sourcing) while learning the architecture.
  • Write clean, well-tested code and take feedback through code review.
  • Contribute to APIs, data and integration work across the stack.

What they're looking for

  • Solid Java fundamentals (from a CS degree or equivalent self-taught experience).
  • Evidence of building things and teaching yourself fast - a side project, dissertation, hackathon or open-source work.
  • Care for clean, correct code and a willingness to learn payments/fintech.
  • UK-based, with the right to work in the UK.

Nice to have (not essential)

  • Any exposure to Spring, AWS, SQL, Python, Flutter/Dart or event-driven systems.
  • Interest in fintech, open banking or AI agents.
