Analytics / BI Developer

The Analytics / BI Developer delivers the reporting the business relies on and builds and maintains the data layer underneath it. The role combines report and dashboard delivery with hands-on data engineering across the data warehouse and ETL estate, working within established design patterns.

Mission

  • Build, maintain and improve reports and dashboards for business stakeholders, delivering output that is accurate, consistent, and on time.
  • Understand reporting requests properly before building, clarifying the underlying business question and challenging requirements where needed.
  • Own the quality of the reporting delivered, including consistent definitions and metrics across reports.
  • Develop and maintain the reporting layer of the data warehouse, including the views, data models and data preparation that reports depend on.
  • Monitor ETL pipelines and warehouse loads, and troubleshoot and resolve pipeline failures and data issues, escalating where the cause falls outside established patterns.
  • Make routine changes to ETL pipelines and the data warehouse, such as new fields, extended loads and new tables, following established design patterns and within the change authority granted.
  • Identify data quality issues early, and resolve or escalate them before they reach the business.
  • Document reports, data models, pipelines and changes as part of everyday work, reducing single-person dependency on the data estate.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance and mentorship to the Junior Data Analyst.
  • Engage directly with internal stakeholders on reporting needs, and with vendors and suppliers where a data or reporting requirement calls for it.
  • Develop over time from report delivery into interpretation and insight: investigating why results move, identifying trends and raising findings.

Outcomes

  • Reporting delivered reliably, accurately and on time, with consistent definitions across reports.
  • Reporting requests understood properly before work begins, reducing rework.
  • Data issues identified early and resolved or escalated before they reach the business.
  • A reporting layer that makes new reports faster and more reliable to build.
  • Routine ETL support and change handled within the team, reducing dependency on the Head of Analytics & Business Enablement.
  • Changes made safely and within the change authority granted, with no unreviewed changes to production.
  • A data estate that is better documented over time.
  • Continuity of reporting delivery during any absence of the Senior Reporting and Data Analyst.
  • A Junior Data Analyst who grows in capability and independence.
  • Demonstrable progression from report delivery towards engineering and insight, with change authority widening as trust is established.

Qualifications

  • Degree, diploma or equivalent qualification in computer science, information systems, statistics, mathematics or similar, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Two to three years of experience across reporting, analytics and data engineering.
  • Strong SQL, including complex queries, views, stored procedures and performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with an ETL or orchestration tool, ideally Azure Data Factory.
  • Hands-on experience building reports and dashboards in a mainstream BI tool.
  • Understanding of data warehouse modelling concepts, including dimensional models.
  • Experience with Exasol, Yellowfin BI, SQL Server, Azure Logic Apps or the wider Azure data stack is advantageous.
  • Ability to work within an existing architecture and follow established patterns.
  • Good written and verbal communication, with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
