Junior IT/Systems Administrator in Syracuse, NY, maintains corporate servers, networks, and Microsoft environments (Exchange, SharePoint, SQL, M365) and supports VMware ESXi clusters, backups, and security compliance.
Overview
The Junior Systems Administrator provides day-to-day support and administration of the corporate servers and network users by applying knowledge of server hardware, software, and procedures. Investigates, identifies, and resolves hardware and software issues. Administers all Microsoft servers, including Domain Controllers, Exchange, SharePoint, SQL, SCCM and Microsoft 365. Installs server hardware and peripherals and coordinates vendor hardware and software support when applicable. Is responsible for the disaster recovery and backup schemes. Monitors and reports server performance. Reviews and performs appropriate security and updates from Microsoft and applicable third-party vendors. Upgrades operating systems and system software. Provides uptime reports as well as server health reports on a regular basis. Works closely with the System Administrator to develop knowledge and cross training.
This position will be located onsite at our Syracuse, NY location. This is not a hybrid or remote opportunity.
Responsibilities
Job duties specific to this position:
- Assisted in the administration and support Microsoft 365 and Office 365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Intune, and Entra ID (Azure Active Directory).
- Assisted with Microsoft 365 tenant deployments, migrations, and transition projects, including mailbox, file, and collaboration platform migrations.
- Be able to create, manage, and troubleshoot user accounts, groups, licenses, and security policies within Microsoft 365 and Entra ID.
- Experience in supporting hybrid identity environments utilizing Active Directory, Entra Connect, and Single Sign-On (SSO) technologies.
- Have installed, configured, maintained, and done troubleshooting on Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and related infrastructure services.
- Supported core infrastructure components including Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, file services, and certificate services.
- Monitored system performance, availability, and security across on-premises Servers, PCs, and cloud-based environments.
- Assisted with server upgrades, patch management, backup and recovery processes, and disaster recovery planning.
- Worked with deployment, manage, and support virtualized infrastructure utilizing hypervisor platforms such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, or Nutanix AHV.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems/Computer Science or equivalent and 1-3 years of professional experience in system administration. Experience considered in lieu of formal degree.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft technologies.
- Strong written and verbal communications. Teamwork skills are essential.
- Server Administration certifications (MCSA, MCSE, MCP, MTA, etc.). Experience considered in lieu of certifications.
- Knowledge of healthcare industry helpful.
Knowledge of:
- Strong Microsoft operating system and network knowledge to carry out assigned administrative tasks with the need for limited supervision.
- Virtualization technology, VMware or equivalent including Storage Area Networks.
- Overall system administration responsibility for major platform and operating systems.
- Microsoft 365/Azure
Ability to:
- Conduct ongoing security risk assessments including the monitoring, investigation and reporting of security and access violations.
- Install and maintain network servers, operating systems, and other network equipment.
- Demonstrate leadership and foster collaborative team approach – interacts well with front line and management providing consultation and expert advice on systems security related topics.
- Perform system vulnerability assessments and conduct trade-off studies to recommend methods on countering threats to systems.
- Review system performance statistics; perform system modifications and fixes.
- Research, test and evaluate vendor hardware and software products.
- Conduct feasibility studies and develop system, time, equipment and cost requirements.
- Provide 24/7 support as needed.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
