Junior Legal Counsel
Machete is a fast-growing organisation operating within the online gaming and digital entertainment sector. We are driven by innovation, operational excellence, and a commitment to delivering safe, compliant, and enjoyable gaming experiences. As we continue to scale across multiple jurisdictions, we are strengthening our internal teams to ensure we remain at the forefront of industry standards and regulatory expectations.
Tasks
About the Role
We are looking for a Junior Legal Counsel to support Machete across two key areas: commercial contracts and gaming licensing. This is a practical, hands-on in-house legal role, working closely with internal stakeholders and external advisers to ensure contracts are well managed and licensing requirements are properly maintained.
The role would suit an early-career legal professional who wants to develop broad in-house experience within a fast-moving, international iGaming business. The primary focus is legal work relating to contracts and licensing, rather than ownership of a wider compliance function.
Key Responsibilities
Contracts & Commercial Legal Support
- Draft, review and support the negotiation of contracts with service providers, suppliers and other business partners.
- Review contractual terms and identify key legal and commercial considerations, escalating matters where appropriate.
- Ensure contracts are appropriately documented, executed and maintained.
- Maintain a systematic contract management process, including tracking agreements, key dates, renewals and obligations.
- Support consistent contract governance across the business.
Gaming Licensing
- Support applications for gaming licences across relevant jurisdictions.
- Assist with the preparation and coordination of documentation required for licence applications and renewals.
- Maintain existing gaming licences and keep records of licence conditions, requirements and renewal dates.
- Support the business in ensuring ongoing licensing requirements are understood and appropriately addressed.
Legal Support
- Work with external legal advisers where specialist advice is required.
- Provide practical legal support to internal stakeholders on day-to-day contractual and licensing matters.
- Carry out legal research and assist with a range of legal matters relevant to the business.
- Maintain organised legal records and documentation.
Requirements
- A recognised law qualification, such as an LL.D., Master of Advocacy or equivalent law degree/qualification.
- Approximately 1–3 years of relevant legal experience, ideally in commercial, corporate, gaming, technology or another regulated environment.
- Practical experience drafting and reviewing commercial contracts.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify, assess and communicate contractual and legal risks clearly.
- Strong organisational skills, particularly in managing multiple agreements, deadlines and licensing requirements.
- Good legal research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A practical and commercially minded approach to legal work.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks and know when to seek guidance or escalate issues.
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach.
- Previous experience with gaming licensing is an advantage but is not essential.
- A warrant to practise law in Malta, or eligibility to obtain one, would be considered an advantage rather than a requirement.
- Professionalism and discretion when handling confidential legal and commercial information.
- The ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and external advisers.
- A genuine interest in developing a career in-house within the iGaming and technology sector.
Benefits
- Health Insurance After Probation
- A competitive and attractive salary
- Annual wellbeing allowance to support your physical and mental health
- Regular social events to foster strong team connections
- Daily lunch allowance when working from the office
- Birthday Gift
