Junior Linux System Administrator
Summary
Junior Linux System Administrator joining an IT team (office in Daresbury, UK) to install, configure and maintain Linux servers, monitor system health, manage users/permissions, handle patching, backups and basic networking (DNS, SSH, firewalls). Core stack: Linux (Ubuntu/Debian, RHEL), Bash/Python, with training in cloud, automation, security and DevOps.
Salary: £25,000 - 33,000 per year
Requirements:- A good understanding of Linux, particularly Ubuntu/Debian and/or RHEL-based distributions
- Familiarity with the Linux command line
- Basic knowledge of TCP/IP networking, DNS, SSH, and firewalls
- Understanding of Linux users, groups, permissions, services, and filesystems
- Some experience with Bash, Python, or another scripting language would be beneficial
- An interest in cloud technologies, virtualisation, containers, or automation
- Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to learn and develop new technical skills
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- Previous commercial Linux administration experience is not essential; home labs, personal projects, certifications, college/university work, or other practical Linux experience will also be considered
- Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers
- Monitor server performance, availability, and system health
- Troubleshoot Linux, network, hardware, and software issues
- Manage users, groups, permissions, and access
- Perform system updates, patching, and routine maintenance
- Assist with backups and recovery procedures
- Support basic networking, DNS, SSH, and firewall configuration
- Help maintain system documentation and operational procedures
- Assist with automation and scripting where appropriate
