Reports to: Head of audience
Location: Highstreet Kensington, London

The Junior Social Media Manager is responsible for the day-to-day execution of New Scientist's social media and push notification strategy. They create, schedule and publish content across platforms, helping bring our journalism to life for audiences wherever they are.

Working closely with the Senior Social Manager, Audience Editor and editorial teams, they ensure our social output is timely, engaging and aligned with audience and editorial priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain New Scientist's social media channels on a daily basis.
  • Create, schedule and publish engaging social content that supports editorial priorities and audience growth.
  • Write and manage app and web push notifications to maximise reach and engagement.
  • Monitor social media performance and identify opportunities to improve results.
  • Support the brand's tone of voice across all social and push messaging.
  • Spot trends, platform updates and emerging content opportunities.
  • Contribute creative ideas for new social formats and audience engagement initiatives.

Skills and experience required

Essential

  • Experience creating and publishing content for social media platforms, either professionally or through personal, freelance or student projects.
  • Strong understanding of major social platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and X.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and messaging for different platforms.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • An interest in audience engagement, social media trends and digital publishing.
  • A keen interest in science, journalism and storytelling.

Desirable

  • Experience using analytics tools to monitor content performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Basic image, video or social content production skills.
  • Understanding of SEO, audience development or newsletter growth.
