Junior Software Engineer
Summary
An early-career Junior Software Engineer role in Auckland, delivering well-defined development tasks within a squad under a Tech Lead's guidance. Day to day involves coding with AI coding tools, debugging, testing, code review, and documentation in a regulated environment.
We're looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join a growing technology squad in Auckland. This is a great opportunity for an early-career developer to build real-world experience delivering production software, working with growing independence under the guidance of an experienced Squad Tech Lead. You'll work within an AI-accelerated delivery model, using AI coding tools daily within established guardrails, while developing the debugging, testing and review disciplines that underpin high-quality software delivery.
As this role sits within a regulated environment, successful candidates will be required to complete a compliance vetting process as part of onboarding.
The Role
Reporting to the Squad Product Owner with technical direction from the Squad Tech Lead, you'll deliver well-defined development tasks within your squad, working alongside intermediate engineers and collaborating closely with Quality Assurance, Testing and Security/Compliance functions. This is the first professional rung on the squad's engineering ladder, with a clear path toward independent, end-to-end feature delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver assigned tasks to an agreed definition of done: working, tested, reviewed and documented
- Use AI coding tools daily within squad guardrails, verifying and correcting AI-generated code rather than merging anything you don't fully understand
- Debug methodically: reproduce, isolate and fix root causes rather than symptoms
- Break work down, estimate honestly, and communicate progress and blockers early
- Act on code review feedback and apply learnings to future work
- Set development goals with your Squad Product Owner and Squad Tech Lead, and work towards them
- Contribute openly to squad ceremonies, reviews and team problem-solving
- Support interns and newer squad members where able
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Up to two years' professional software development experience, or strong project work demonstrating equivalent capability
- Solid programming fundamentals: data structures, algorithms and clean, readable code
- Working knowledge of version control (Git) and modern development tooling
- Experience using AI coding assistants, with the discipline to verify generated code rather than trust it
- Developing debugging capability: forming hypotheses, reading errors and logs, and narrowing problems methodically
- Awareness of secure coding fundamentals
- Clear written and verbal communication, with a willingness to ask questions, accept feedback and learn quickly
- Adaptability, enthusiasm for new tools and ways of working, and high personal and professional standards
If you're an early-career software engineer looking to build your skills in a fast-paced, AI-accelerated engineering environment, we'd love to hear from you. Apply now!
