About the role:

As a Kaipūhanga Raraunga Mātāmua Senior Data Engineer, you'll bring a rare blend of data engineering, data architecture and data modelling expertise to the team. You'll partner closely with business stakeholders, product teams and Group Data functions to understand customer and marketing challenges, translate them into clear data solutions, and provide technical leadership across the delivery lifecycle.

This is more than a hands‑on engineering role. You'll help shape data architecture decisions, influence engineering standards, mentor team members and guide the evolution of our customer data platforms as we continue to mature our loyalty and CRM capabilities across both Australia and New Zealand.

Working across technologies including Databricks, Snowflake, Azure and Terraform, you'll help deliver scalable, secure and observable data products while contributing to the future direction of our customer data ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and optimise modern data pipelines, data products and customer data solutions using Databricks, Snowflake and Azure technologies.
  • Support data architecture and high‑level solution design activities in partnership with Group Data Architecture teams.
  • Develop scalable data models that support customer, loyalty, CRM and MarTech initiatives across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to understand challenges, define problem statements and translate requirements into actionable data solutions.
  • Deliver production‑grade data platforms with strong focus on quality, performance, governance, security and reliability.
  • Implement observability practices including monitoring, lineage, logging, tracing and automated data quality controls.
  • Contribute to technical direction, engineering standards and architectural decision‑making across the team.
  • Mentor Data Engineers and actively support capability uplift through coaching, reviews and knowledge sharing.
  • Champion modern engineering practices including Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and automation.
  • Collaborate across product, engineering and data teams to deliver high‑value customer outcomes.

What you’ll bring:

We're looking for a senior data professional who can think beyond pipelines and platforms. Someone who can partner with the business to understand customer and loyalty challenges, define the right data approach, and provide the architectural guidance that enables teams to deliver with confidence.

  • Significant experience delivering modern data engineering solutions within complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong expertise across both Databricks and Snowflake, with the ability to evaluate and work across multiple data platform technologies.
  • Deep capability in data modelling and data engineering, with the confidence to operate across all three disciplines.
  • Strong grasp of data architecture principles
  • Advanced SQL and Python skills, coupled with experience building scalable and reliable data pipelines.
  • Experience working with Azure data services, including Data Factory, Data Lake and cloud‑native data platforms.
  • Familiarity with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, security, observability and operational excellence principles.
  • Ability to influence technical direction and collaborate effectively with architects, engineers and business stakeholders.
  • Proven experience mentoring engineers and helping uplift engineering capability within a team environment.
  • A customer‑first mindset, with the ability to connect business problems to practical and scalable data solutions.

The base salary range for this role is $117,000.00 to $155,500.00perannum, plus 15% STI based on company performance, a 5% KiwiSaver employer contribution and health insurance through Southern Cross.
