Lead Backend Engineer

About the Role

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will sit at the intersection of architecture, engineering excellence, and team leadership. You will shape how our backend platform evolves, guide and mentor engineers in making sound technical decisions, and ensure our systems scale reliably as our products and customers grow. This role is for someone who goes beyond writing great code. You think in systems, understanding tradeoffs, influence technical direction, and help teams move faster without compromising quality. You will work closely cross-functionally with Products and cross-domain PODs to design and deliver critical backend capabilities that power our banking platform. If you enjoy designing complex systems, solving challenging problems, mentoring engineers, and turning ambiguity into clear technical direction, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities

• Designing scalable microservices and event-driven architectures that power digital banking capabilities.
• Defining and evolving backend architecture standards, patterns, and best practices.
• Leading technical design discussions and architectural trade-offs across domains.
• Guiding teams to build reliable, secure, and high-performance systems in production.
• Driving evolutionary design, improving existing systems while delivering new capabilities.
• Mentoring engineers, reviewing designs, and elevating technical craftsmanship across the team.
• Collaborating with Product Managers, Frontend Engineers, QA, SRE, and Platform teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Leading initiatives to elevate engineering evolution by exploring emerging architectural patterns, new design approaches, and innovative engineering ideas.

Qualifications

• Citizenship Requirement: Malaysians only (Got a MyKad? You’re our type!).
• Strong proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming (OOP) languages.
• Strong understanding of messaging systems such as Kafka or equivalent.
• Experience with both relational (e.g., PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases.
• Familiarity with designing and consuming web APIs of reasonable complexity.
• Hands-on experience with containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Curiosity and drive for continuous learning and improvement.
• At least 7+ years of experience in backend software development.
