Player/coach Lead BI role at Bowhead Specialty: gather business requirements, manage priorities and the BI backlog, and personally build and support Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models using Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, SQL, DAX, and Power Query, while mentoring and shaping team growth.
Bowhead is seeking a hands-on Lead Business Intelligence professional to lead and evolve our BI capabilities. This is a player/coach role combining direct technical delivery with stakeholder leadership.
You will work with business leaders to understand their needs and priorities, translate them into effective BI solutions, and personally contribute to their design and delivery. You will also help manage BI priorities and determine how the team should grow as demand increases.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead stakeholder requirements gathering and translate business needs into KPIs, metrics, requirements, and analytical solutions.
- Manage expectations, priorities, scope, and trade-offs across competing business needs.
- Personally design, develop, deploy, and support Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models.
- Perform hands-on development and analysis using Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, SQL, DAX, and Power Query.
- Own and evolve the BI semantic layer, ensuring consistent business definitions, measures, and reporting.
- Partner with Data Engineering on data requirements, quality, and integration.
- Manage the BI backlog and improve the quality, reliability, and adoption of production reporting.
- Assess BI demand and capability gaps and help determine how the BI team should grow.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring while remaining an active hands-on contributor.
Required Skills
- Strong hands-on Power BI experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric and Azure data services.
- Strong SQL, DAX, Power Query, dimensional modeling, and semantic-modeling skills.
- Experience delivering BI solutions from requirements through production support.
- Strong requirements-gathering and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to set expectations, establish priorities, manage scope, and communicate trade-offs.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate effectively as a hands-on player/coach.
