Lead Engineer / Architect - Payments & AI
It's fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they are doing!
We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business.
Role Overview:
We are looking for a hands-on Lead Engineer / Architect with strong payments, transaction processing, and AI/agent engineering experience to design and build AI-driven solutions capable of executing end-to-end transactions across multiple markets.
The role will own the technical solution from requirements and architecture through agent development, payment integration, testing, and successful transaction execution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and build AI agents capable of initiating, processing, and completing end-to-end payment transactions.
- Understand the payment transaction lifecycle and translate payment requirements into agent workflows, business rules, APIs, and system integrations.
- Analyze market-specific payment requirements and variations and design configurable, reusable solutions.
- Define architecture for agent orchestration, transaction state management, tool/API invocation, exception handling, retries, and recovery.
- Integrate agents with payment platforms, gateways, transaction processing systems, APIs, and enterprise services.
- Define appropriate boundaries between AI-driven decisioning and deterministic payment/business logic.
- Develop primarily using Python, LLMs, and appropriate agent frameworks.
- Implement security, authorization, auditability, observability, and guardrails around agent-driven payment actions.
- Lead end-to-end testing and demonstrate successful transaction execution for each target market.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, conduct design/code reviews, and mentor engineers.
Required Experience:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including architecture and technical leadership.
- Strong hands-on Python development experience.
- Proven experience designing and building LLM/GenAI applications and AI agents.
- Strong understanding of payments and transaction processing.
- Experience with payment APIs, gateways, transaction processing platforms, or payment services.
- Strong understanding of payment lifecycle concepts such as transaction initiation, authorization, processing, transaction status, exceptions, and completion.
- Strong experience with REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and cloud platforms.
- Experience designing enterprise integrations and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
AI / Agent Experience:
- Experience building AI agents and agent-based workflows.
- Experience with agent orchestration, tool/function calling, structured outputs, and LLM integration.
- Experience with frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, or equivalent.
- Experience implementing AI guardrails, evaluation, observability, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Ability to determine where AI should be used versus deterministic rules within payment workflows.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience across multiple payment markets or regional payment ecosystems.
- Knowledge of payment authorization, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, fraud/risk, disputes, or exception management.
- Experience with Kafka or other event-streaming technologies.
- Experience designing configurable architectures supporting market-specific payment variations.
Success Criteria:
The successful candidate will be able to take a payment transaction requirement, design the agent and supporting architecture, build the solution, integrate with the required payment systems, and demonstrate a successfully completed transaction for each designated market.
This is a hands-on architecture and engineering role. The candidate must be comfortable coding, debugging, integrating payment systems, and owning the end-to-end technical solution.
