Description

For an international engineering and consultancy organisation active in the Mission Critical Facilities and Data Centre industry, R-inhouse Recruitment is looking for an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to strengthen the mechanical engineering team in Frankfurt. In this role, you will work with some of the most demanding data centre clients in the world and collaborate with colleagues across Europe and other international locations. You will be involved in technically complex Mission Critical Facilities projects where reliability, resilience, operational continuity and high-quality engineering are essential. The role combines mechanical engineering with technical coordination, project delivery, vendor management and testing and commissioning activities. You will work on both new-build and Brown Field Services projects, including projects in live data centre environments.

Your role

As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will manage and deliver mechanical work packages across multiple Mission Critical Facilities projects. You will work closely with project managers, clients, contractors, vendors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and delivering mechanical work packages across multiple projects;
  • Identifying project scope, design requirements and management objectives;
  • Delivering project documentation while ensuring the quality and flow of information required by contractors, vendors and regulatory authorities;
  • Writing technical specifications and reports;
  • Assisting the Project Manager with the preparation and review of project costs and risk assessments;
  • Developing and maintaining strong technical relationships with vendors and suppliers;
  • Reviewing contractor pre-qualifications and preparing tender evaluation summaries;
  • Evaluating technical proposals and making recommendations to clients regarding vendor selection;
  • Preparing technical specifications for tenders;
  • Representing the organisation during Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT);
  • Supporting and representing the organisation during site testing and commissioning activities;
  • Working on Brown Field Services projects in live data centre environments, including risk management, assessments and testing and commissioning protocols;
  • Communicating project status to internal directors and external stakeholders, including clients;
  • Contributing to the optimisation of internal processes and sharing technical knowledge within the Mission Critical Facilities team.

The projects

You will be working on Mission Critical Facilities, primarily complex data centre projects for leading operators and technology companies. Data centre projects require advanced mechanical engineering knowledge beyond the standard requirements of conventional building projects. Designs must support high availability, resilience, energy efficiency, maintainability, operational continuity and long-term reliability.

You will work in a multidisciplinary and international environment alongside specialists in:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Civil and Structural engineering
  • Building services
  • Architecture
  • Fire safety
  • Controls and automation
  • Security technology
  • Construction and projectmanagement

Together, these disciplines develop integrated designs and solutions for technically demanding data centre environments.

Brown Field Services

A particular part of the role involves Brown Field Services. This means working within existing and operational data centres where engineering activities must be planned and executed without compromising the continuity and safety of critical operations. You will be involved in activities such as risk assessments, technical assessments, testing and commissioning protocols and coordination with stakeholders working within live environments. This makes the position particularly suitable for engineers who understand the operational requirements and risks associated with Mission Critical Facilities.

What you bring

We are looking for an entrepreneurial, results-oriented and proactive mechanical engineering professional with a positive, flexible and problem-solving attitude.

You have:

  • A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in mechanical engineering;
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design and/or installation;
  • Good knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction industry;
  • A good understanding of the daily operational business of data centre and Mission Critical Facilities clients;
  • Strong technical and analytical skills;
  • A proactive, entrepreneurial and flexible attitude;
  • The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and international teams;
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with clients, contractors, vendors and internal stakeholders.

Experience in data centres, Mission Critical Facilities or other highly critical technical environments is highly valued.

What you can expect

You will join an international and technically strong engineering environment where you can work on some of the most challenging Mission Critical Facilities projects in the industry.

The organisation offers:

  • Challenging and technically complex international data centre projects;
  • A senior technical role with significant responsibility;
  • Collaboration with experienced mechanical, electrical, structural and other engineering specialists;
  • Opportunities for professional development, training and knowledge sharing;
  • An informal and inclusive working environment where people and team spirit are important;
  • Flexibility and support to help maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life;
  • A laptop and company mobile phone;
  • A workplace in Frankfurt am Main;
  • Long-term career development opportunities within an international organisation.

Why this role?

This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanical engineer who wants to work on technically demanding Mission Critical Facilities and data centre projects in an international environment. You will be involved in the complete mechanical project lifecycle, from design and technical specifications through tendering, vendor selection and project delivery to Factory Acceptance Testing and site testing and commissioning. The combination of complex engineering, international collaboration and exposure to live data centre environments makes this a strong next step for an experienced mechanical engineer looking to build a long-term career within the Mission Critical Facilities sector.
