About the role
Department of Industry, Science and Resources is building its first enterprise Microservices and Event Driven Architecture foundations, and embedding AI enabled engineering practices across its software delivery lifecycle.

We're looking for a Lead Microservices and AI Technical Architect to lead this transformation. You'll set the technical direction, guide engineering decisions and drive the adoption of AI across delivery, while making sure your knowledge stays with the team long after the contract ends.

What you'll be doing
  • Lead the design, governance and evolution of cloud native, microservices based and AI enabled platforms
  • Establish modern engineering and AI delivery practices, including AI enabled SDLC, DevSecOps, CI/CD, observability and automated testing
  • Drive platform modernisation, including microservices enhancement, containerisation and reusable engineering patterns
  • Build the team's technical capability through knowledge transfer, engineering governance and hands on leadership
What you'll bring
  • Extensive experience designing and governing cloud native, microservices and event driven architectures in complex enterprise environments
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI engineering, including deploying and operationalising enterprise AI capabilities, semantic search and machine learning solutions
  • Strong software and platform engineering skills across modern development frameworks, DevSecOps, CI/CD and security by design
  • A track record of leading enterprise technology transformation and influencing architecture decisions at a senior level
  • Strong stakeholder and leadership skills, with experience guiding multidisciplinary teams and delivery partners
Nice to have:
  • Experience with container platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, AKS, EKS or GKE
  • Background in SRE, platform engineering and observability tooling at enterprise scale
  • Experience coaching geographically dispersed Agile teams

  • Location: Canberra, ACT (some flexibility for remote work, occasional travel required)
  • Security clearance: Must be able to obtain Baseline
  • Ideal Start date: Thursday, 1 October 2026
