Lead Power BI / Data Analyst – Federal Government

12-month contract + 12-month extension option | Hybrid working | ACT, NSW, VIC or QLD

An opportunity is available for an experienced Lead Power BI / Data Analyst to join a specialised Data Analytics, Transformation, Automation & AI team within a large Australian Government department.

This is a hands-on senior role suited to someone with strong experience across Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, data modelling and analytics, combined with the ability to work directly with business and technical stakeholders to turn complex data into clear, actionable insights.

The opportunity

The team delivers and supports enterprise data analytics platforms and services, AI solutions, DevOps services and automation capabilities across the department and its partner agencies.

Working within this environment, you will help design, develop and support reliable business intelligence and reporting solutions that enable informed decision-making, improve transparency and provide meaningful insights across operational, program and executive reporting.

Key responsibilities

You will:

  • Analyse data from multiple sources to identify trends, patterns and business insights.

  • Design, develop and maintain dashboards, reports and business intelligence solutions.

  • Engage with stakeholders to understand information needs and reporting requirements.

  • Translate complex data into clear and actionable insights for decision-makers.

  • Develop and maintain semantic models, datasets, measures and reporting artefacts.

  • Validate data quality and ensure the consistency, accuracy and reliability of reporting outputs.

  • Investigate reporting issues, data anomalies and user enquiries.

  • Support testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance of reporting and analytics solutions.

  • Provide guidance and support to report consumers and business users.

  • Promote self-service analytics and business intelligence best practices.

  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting, automation and performance measurement.

What we're looking for

You will be an experienced data and BI professional operating at approximately EL1 / Lead level, with demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.

You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing and supporting business intelligence, reporting and analytics solutions using Microsoft Fabric, Power BI or similar enterprise analytics platforms.

  • Strong technical skills across data modelling, semantic modelling, DAX, SQL, Power Query and data transformation, including development of datasets, measures, dashboards and reports.

  • Experience validating data quality, investigating anomalies and ensuring reporting accuracy.

  • An understanding of appropriate data governance, security, privacy and records management practices.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to gather and interpret reporting requirements and communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience in any of the following will be well regarded:

  • Microsoft Fabric

  • Power BI Premium

  • Azure Data Services

  • DevOps

  • AI-enabled analytics solutions

  • Australian Government environments

  • Executive, operational or program reporting

Contract details

  • Level: Lead / EL1 equivalent

  • Contract: 12 months

  • Extension: Further 12-month extension option

  • Hours: 40 hours per week

  • Locations: ACT, NSW, VIC or QLD

  • Working arrangements: Hybrid

  • Security: Must be able to obtain an Australian Government Baseline security clearance
