Lead/Principal Data Scientist - NLP/LLM
Description
About Partex.AI :
Partex.AI works at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare. We help leading life-sciences and healthcare organizations speed up medical research, diagnostics and therapeutic development through data-driven intelligence.
We are a fast-growing company with a global outlook and a focus on real-world impact. Our Data & AI team of 40+ engineers is scaling quickly, and we are building the leadership layer that will take it to the next stage.
About the role :
You will lead our data science work across healthcare and life-sciences data, from structuring clinical and biomedical text to building the models behind our products. You will own the modelling approach, lead a team of data scientists, and be accountable for delivering models that work in production.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will set the scientific direction, review the work closely, and turn complex findings into decisions for product, clients and leadership.
Key responsibilities :
Technical ownership :
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of data science projects, from problem framing and dataset acquisition to model development, deployment and monitoring.
- Lead NLP and information-extraction work on clinical and biomedical data : entity recognition, relation extraction, classification and structuring of unstructured text.
- Decide when to use classical ML, deep learning or LLMs, including fine-tuning and LLM-based extraction.
- Work with the knowledge graph team on entity linking, ontology mapping and graph-based modelling.
- Set standards for experiment design, model evaluation, reproducibility and data quality.
Team leadership and delivery :
- Lead a team of data scientists : sprint planning, task allocation and day-to-day unblocking.
- Own delivery for your projects, including tracking progress, managing risks and giving status updates to stakeholders.
- Review models, code and analyses, and raise the scientific bar of the team.
- Mentor data scientists, run regular 1 : 1s and support their growth plans.
- It's interview and hire for your team.
Business and clients :
- Present findings and model performance to leadership and clients in clear, non-technical terms.
- Support client pitches and technical due diligence with data science expertise.
- Contribute to new AI products and to IP such as patents, whitepapers and publications.
Must-have qualifications :
- 10+ years in data science or ML, with at least 3 years leading data scientists and delivering projects end to end.
- Strong Python and a deep understanding of modern model architectures, especially transformers (encoder models such as BERT or BioBERT, and decoder-based LLMs), with hands-on experience in PyTorch and Hugging Face.
- Deep experience in NLP : information extraction, text classification and structuring unstructured text.
- Hands-on experience applying LLMs, including prompting, fine-tuning (full and parameter-efficient methods such as LoRA) and evaluation.
- Strong statistics and experiment design, with a rigorous approach to model evaluation.
- Experience taking models to production in collaboration with engineering teams.
- Proven ownership of delivery using Agile practices : planning, estimation and stakeholder updates.
- Ability to explain complex results clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Master's or PhD in a quantitative field preferred, or equivalent experience.
Nice-to-have qualifications :
- Experience in pharma, healthcare or life sciences, especially with clinical trial, EHR or biomedical literature data.
- Experience with biomedical ontologies (UMLS, MeSH, SNOMED) and knowledge graphs.
- Familiarity with MLOps tooling, Docker, Kubernetes and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
- Patents, publications or open-source contributions in NLP or ML.
