LEAD RECREATION ASSISTANT (LIFEGUARD)
About the position: This position is a Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) Regular Full Time (RFT) position. It will be assigned to the Fort Eustis Aquatics Center. Position is guaranteed 35 hours per week. This position may be subject to holidays, nights, weekends and on-call work.
The purpose of these positions is to serve as a lead lifeguard over three or more lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related aquatics program duties. Provides on-the-job training to new employees. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to ensure that procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Demonstrates work methods and provides work-related guidance, ensures that the worksite materials and tools are available. Checks pool water chemistry according to established schedules and instructions (e.g., temperature, chlorine, pH, etc.) Monitors activities within assigned swimming areas, maintaining order and enforcing established rules of safety and behavior. Observes the condition and behavior of swimmers to ascertain any potential problems. Perform lifeguard duties. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. Uses a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid. Assist in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility. Cleans swimming assigned areas such as bathrooms, decks, locker rooms, showers, and pool according to established schedules and instructions. Reports issues of performance, progress, training needs, or disciplinary problems to supervisor. Completes appropriate paperwork to include, but not limited to, daily log sheets, AF Form 708, incident reports, etc. Verifies that customers are authorized to use facility by checking appropriate identification. Provides swimming lessons and instruction to groups of adults and/or children, or to individual adults or children. Instructs patrons on rules and procedures for safe swimming following prescribed lesson plans. Leads and participates in required in-service training for at least one hour twice a month for a total of two hours and maintains currency, capability, and certifications to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety (WSI) and lifeguard (LGI) instruction for the activities and skill levels taught.
