Senior/Lead engineer for an Aotearoa-founded startup in the resource consenting and environmental intelligence space. Support and lead development of Shoal's production platform. Rapidly translate prototypes and internal tools into robust, scalable features. Enable and support data scientists and research developers to contribute effectively to the production codebase. Establish pragmatic engineering practices that balance speed with reliability. This is a wonderful opportunity for a lead/senior to get in the door early at an emerging startup experiencing significant interest and growth.
Key responsibilities
Support/Lead development of Shoal's production platform across frontend, backend, and cloud infrastructure
Rapidly translate AI-assisted prototypes and internal tools into robust, scalable features
Actively leverage AI tools to accelerate development and set the standard for their use across the team
Enable and support data scientists and research developers to contribute effectively to the production codebase
Establish pragmatic engineering practices that balance speed with reliability
About you
Proven experience building and shipping production-grade software in a commercial environment (ideally as a senior or lead engineer working on complex data solutions)
Demonstrated ability to move quickly without compromising code quality
Experience working in start-up or fast-paced product environments, and comfort with evolving requirements
Comfort working alongside data scientists, researchers and other domain experts and integrating experimental workflows into production systems, with associated cultural competency within an Aotearoa New Zealand context
Interest in AI-assisted development and improving team-wide development velocity
