Lead Shopify Engineer / Architect

Salary: £70,000 - 85,000 per year

• 8 or more years in ecommerce engineering, including at least 5 years building on Shopify and Shopify Plus.
• Led at least one platform migration from start to finish, ideally from Magento to Shopify, including data, redirects, SEO and cutover.
• Experience designing a shared theme or platform for multiple brands or storefronts.
• Experience leading engineering teams and managing agencies or contractors through scoping, estimation, code review and delivery.
• Owned the release process for a high-revenue ecommerce business, including during peak trading.
• Expert knowledge of Liquid, Online Store 2.0, sections, blocks, metafields and metaobjects, Checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions, the Admin and Storefront GraphQL APIs, webhooks, Shopify Markets, Shopify B2B, Flow, the Shopify CLI and operating multiple Shopify Plus stores.
• Strong JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML and CSS skills, plus experience with Core Web Vitals optimisation, component design systems, WCAG 2.1 AA and A/B testing that does not slow the site down.
• ERP integration experience, ideally with NetSuite; middleware such as Celigo; custom app development in Remix and Node.js; and integrations with payments, tax, shipping, search, reviews, loyalty, email and SMS platforms.
• Knowledge of URL mapping, canonical tags, hreflang, structured data, rollback plans and post-launch monitoring.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD using GitHub Actions or similar, automated testing with Playwright or Cypress, and monitoring; sound knowledge of security, PCI and GDPR.
• Daily use of AI coding tools in production work and experience integrating them into a team workflow, with sound judgement about where people need to check the output.
• Experience with GA4 and server-side tagging, and working knowledge of Snowflake or a similar data warehouse.
• Ability to prioritise by revenue and margin, make the case for changes to the tech stack or vendor spend, and explain technical trade-offs clearly to marketers and executives.
• Ideally, experience with headless commerce or Hydrogen, UK and EU ecommerce including VAT and translation, multi-brand, wholesale or private-equity-backed businesses, or Shopify mobile apps.

• Own the technical roadmap and architecture across every storefront, including store structure, the base theme and presets, the data model, checkout logic and app reduction.
• Lead each migration from discovery through data migration, localisation, redirects, SEO protection, cutover and post-launch support.
• Design and run a delivery process in which AI tools draft, build, review and test work, while engineers check and approve every release.
• Own the repository, branching, environments, CI/CD, automated regression testing for cart, checkout and product pages, monitoring and release decisions, including peak-season change freezes.
• Build a shared library of components and templates so ecommerce, conversion and marketing teams can launch pages and run tests without needing engineering support each time.
• Own integrations with NetSuite, Snowflake and GA4, and maintain a clean data layer so commerce reporting aligns across systems.
• Own Shopify B2B, checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions and third-party apps, and maintain a register of each paid apps cost and value.
• Automate catalogue, pricing and site administration using Shopify Flow, bulk operations, the Admin GraphQL API and AI tools, with people reviewing the output.
• Scope, estimate and sign off agency work against written statements of work, track velocity and spend, and build skills within the team over time.
• Track site speed, uptime, accessibility, security, app numbers, platform spend and technical debt each month.
• Hire and mentor engineers, set standards and translate business needs into clear specifications prioritised by revenue impact.

Were hiring a Lead Shopify Engineer / Architect for our growing multi-brand ecommerce group in Liverpool, on a hybrid basis. This is a permanent role paying up to £85,000 plus benefits. Were moving our international business from Magento to Shopify Plus, working with an agency on the build before the successful candidate takes full ownership of the platform. The platform will use one shared base theme and back end, with individual brand experiences configured through presets, settings, metafields and sections rather than forked code. International trading will be supported through Shopify configuration, including Shopify Markets, VAT, payments and warehouses. The international replatform is the first step in moving our other storefronts onto the shared platform over time. Were building the team around AI tools from the outset, with engineers responsible for architecture, review, quality assurance and release decisions.
