About the role In this position, you will take on a pivotal role in guiding the technical direction of the team responsible for developing and enhancing the infrastructure that supports Klaviyo's diverse messaging services. You will be tasked with formulating technical strategies for systems that handle high volumes of messages while also mentoring junior engineers and addressing intricate issues related to global message deliverability and adherence to regulatory standards.

What you'll do

  • Design and oversee the key elements of the messaging pipeline, which includes processes for message ingestion, routing, delivery, and tracking their status.
  • Spearhead engineering initiatives to enhance the scalability and availability of services across various channels such as email, SMS, MMS, RCS, mobile push notifications, and WhatsApp.
  • Develop backend services using programming languages like Python and Go to manage a messaging pipeline capable of processing hundreds of millions to billions of messages on a daily basis.
  • Convert vague technical specifications into clear, actionable development strategies.
  • Work closely with product, compliance, and platform teams to broaden the messaging functionalities offered by Klaviyo.
  • Set engineering benchmarks for system architecture and code quality to ensure high standards are maintained.
  • Provide mentorship to team members, fostering their growth and integrating AI workflows into the development lifecycle.
  • Analyze system performance and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve technical challenges that may arise during the development process.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure Klaviyo remains at the forefront of messaging infrastructure innovation.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of the development process.
  • Ensure that the messaging infrastructure complies with global regulations and best practices in data privacy and security.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in engineering, particularly in distributed systems and backend architecture.
  • Strong proficiency in either Python or Go, with a willingness to learn the other language as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing large-scale systems on AWS, showcasing a solid understanding of cloud infrastructure.
  • A hands-on technical background that allows for direct contributions to system architecture and coding efforts.
  • A robust product-oriented mindset that links technical choices to customer outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Experience or a proactive approach to experimenting with AI technologies in either professional or personal projects.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and its implementation in messaging systems.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of messaging protocols and standards relevant to multi-channel communication.

Practical notes

  • The salary range for this position is between 112,000 and 168,000 EUR.

  • This role may require occasional travel, up to 10% of the time, for team meetings, onboarding sessions, or participation in industry events.
