About the Team

Community Platforms & LMS is one of three teams within Product & Platform Engineering, responsible for building and maintaining the platforms that connect and support the B Corp network, including community engagement tools (currently B Hive) and learning/education platforms (B Academy). A Tech Lead leads the team and works closely with the department's shared Architecture function — the Solution Architect and Software Architect — to ensure technical standards and platform coherence across Product & Platform Engineering. This is an area of active evolution: while B Hive currently serves as the team's core community platform, the broader toolset supporting community and learning experiences is still being defined, and the team plays a key role in evaluating and shaping that direction going forward. Community Platforms & LMS is central to how B Lab connects, engages, and supports its growing global network of Certified B Corporations and partners, ensuring these platforms are reliable, scalable, and designed around the needs of the B Corp community.

About the Opportunity

As Lead Software Engineer for Community Platforms & LMS, you will serve as the Tech Lead for this team, reporting directly to the Director of Software Engineering. You will own the technical direction of the platforms that connect and support the B Corp network — including B Hive as the team's current community tool — architecting and building solutions, mentoring the engineers on your team, and partnering with the department's shared Architecture function to ensure these platforms scale as B Lab's global network grows. Given that the broader toolset for community and learning experiences is still evolving, you will play a central role in evaluating future platform options and shaping the team's technical direction going forward, making this a strong fit for someone who's energized by ambiguity and building from a less fixed foundation.

Core Responsibilities

Architecture & Development [45%]

  • Architect, develop, and implement solutions for the team's community and learning platforms, including integrations, customized functionality, and new feature development, based on the needs of the B Corp community
  • Lead feature development from ideation to production deployment, troubleshooting complex issues to improve system performance and user experience
  • Design, develop, and manage the platforms that support community engagement and learning experiences (currently including B Hive), adapting the architecture as the toolset evolves
  • Stay current with relevant platform releases, emerging tools, and industry trends, proactively identifying opportunities to improve functionality and user experience

Strategy & Platform Governance [20%]

  • Evaluate the team's current platform utilization and provide strategic recommendations on tooling, including assessing whether to evolve, replace, or expand the current toolset (e.g., B Hive) to better serve the B Corp community
  • Ensure best practices, design patterns, and platform limitations are well understood and followed across all development
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and security across community and learning platforms, implementing data governance practices as appropriate

Planning & Collaboration [20%]

  • Oversee the writing of user stories and acceptance criteria, working closely with product owners, project managers, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in code reviews for ongoing projects to ensure high code quality and adherence to design patterns
  • Maintain thorough documentation for platform configurations, customizations, and integrations to facilitate knowledge transfer and support

People Management and Development [15%]

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation

About B Lab
B Lab™ is the nonprofit behind Certified B Corporations™, a community of businesses that meet verified social, environmental, and governance standards. Together, our movement is working towards a more inclusive, equitable, and fair economic system.

Our history
B Lab began in 2006 with the idea that a different kind of economy was not only possible — it was necessary. Our founders Andrew Kassoy, Bart Houlahan, and Jay Coen Gilbert believed there was a better way to do business: better for workers, better for communities, and better for the planet. When our movement’s first 81 Founding B Corps signed the Declaration of Interdependence in 2007, they were not just proposing a better way of doing business. They were proposing a different definition altogether.

What we’ve achieved
B Lab became known for certifying B Corporations™, companies that meet verified standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. But we do much more than that. We help mobilize a global community of businesses committed to collective action on society’s most critical challenges. In 2010, B Lab was part of successfully drafting and passing benefit corporation in Maryland, the first U.S. state to do so. This created a legal framework that allows companies to keep their values of care and community, not just shareholder value, at the forefront. Today, benefit corporation legislation is active in 52 jurisdictions around the world.

Our future
In 2024, leaders from across the network agreed to evolve into a more integrated organization that embodies interdependence. This next iteration of our global network will balance global coherence with local agency to achieve our vision of economic systems change. We are now building this future together.
