Indigenous Studies – Lecturer Position

The Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, invites applications for a position in Indigenous Studies, at the rank of Lecturer. This is a full time 3 year position with an expected start date of January 1st 2027 or mutually agreed time. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Community Culture and Global Studies (CCGS) .

Applicants must have a PhD in a related area of research and practice by the time of appointment. Applicants with all fields of expertise are encouraged to apply, but we are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrated ability to teach general Indigenous studies from introductory to intermediate levels, through to advanced theory and research methods. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledges and methodologies and a record of engagement and/or lived experience with Indigenous communities and organizations in Canada. Knowledge and experience working in the Interior of British Columbia is an asset.

Courses that need to be taught include INDG 100 Introduction to Decolonization, INDG 203 Indigenous Peoples' Historical Perspectives, INDG 205 Indigenous Identities, INDG 210 Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, INDG 302 Indigenous Governance, INDG 303 Indigenous Studies Theory and Methodology, INDG 304 Indigenous Studies and Field Methods, INDG 308 Indigenous Culture, Heritage and Intellectual Property, INDG 401 Indigenous Research Applications. There may also be opportunities to develop and teach upper-level courses in the candidate’s own area of specialization. While this is primarily a teaching position, lecturers are also expected to participate in the affairs of the department and may fulfill service obligations to the University and community.

It contains both discipline-based and interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
