Oversee legal and compliance functions for an insurance company in Cape Town, drafting contracts, ensuring regulatory adherence, and managing risk controls.

Our client, in the insurance industry, has an opportunity for an experienced Legal and Compliance Officer who will report to the Global Head of Legal, Risk Management, and Compliance. This role involves working independently while being part of a team. The successful candidate will be adaptable, agile, and able to engage in projects across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Compliance:

  • Contribute to building and maintaining the 2nd Line of Defense (LoD) function:
    • Assist the 1st LoD in identifying risks.
    • Help the 1st LoD develop and implement controls.
    • Develop compliance checklists and prepare compliance reports.
  • Oversee group-wide governance documentation.
  • Assist in policy and guideline reviews to ensure compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Assist in training and implementation of policies, guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Draft and review internal policies.

Legal:

  • Draft, maintain, and review legal agreements and contracts.
  • Prepare standard contracts for company departments.
  • Experience working with tenders and relevant documents.
  • Provide advice during contract negotiations, especially for the Commercial Department.
  • Prepare complex legal documents.
  • Negotiate, draft, and implement the terms of agreements in all business contracts.
  • Oversee legal implications of new projects.
  • Review all documentation with legal implications prior to signing and implementation.

Qualifications:

  • LLB degree.
  • RE1 or RE5 Certificate.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of working experience, with at least 2 years in compliance.
  • Proficient in Excel and Word.
  • High level of determination.
  • Strong understanding of compliance activities and commercial matters.
  • Experience in developing and managing compliance monitoring programs.
  • Effective communication skills, able to communicate internally and externally at all levels (lawyers, shareholders, auditors).
