Legal Assistant (Office Automation)

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services in either the Criminal Division or Civil Division. The Criminal Division represents the United States in the investigation and prosecution of federal criminal offenses. Working closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, the division prosecutes a wide range of cases, including violent crime, drug trafficking, financial fraud, cybercrime, child exploitation, immigration offenses, and national security matters. Legal assistants play a vital role in supporting attorneys throughout all phases of criminal litigation, from case initiation through trial and appeal. The Civil Division handles a variety of civil cases and investigations on behalf of the United States, including healthcare and procurement fraud, civil rights enforcement, constitutional challenges to statutes and regulations, environmental defense and enforcement, financial litigation, bankruptcy, asset forfeiture, immigration, and the defense of employment discrimination and tort claims. Legal Assistants play a vital role in supporting attorneys throughout all phases of litigation and investigation. If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Typical work assignments will include: Examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels. Proofreading and cite checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents. Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases. Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents. Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository. Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases. Tracking filing, hearing, and trials dates, and scheduling conference and interviews. Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations. Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. This position is considered a career ladder opportunity, with a full performance level of GS-07. If selected at a lower grade level, you may be non-competitively promoted to the next grade level at the discretion of your supervisor and is contingent upon meeting regulatory and legal requirements for promotion, satisfactory performance, and the availability of higher-level work.
