Full-Time personnel will be assigned to a forty-eight ( 48) hour shift, 48/96 shift schedule.
General Summary
Responsible, for supervising and performing a variety of technical tasks associated with fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, rescue activities, apparatus operations and fire training activities. The Lieutenant position is the first line officer position within the district and performs work on an assigned basis under the direction of the Fire Captain or District Chief. Lieutenants normally supervise single crews or station personnel whereas Captains or District Chiefs supervise multiple crews and/or stations. Lieutenants may perform duties like those of a Captain and can either perform these duties under the direction of a Captain, District Chief, an incident commander, or they could be the supervisor responsible for carrying out those duties.
SUPERVISION
Lieutenants work under the immediate supervision of the Captain or District Chief. General supervision of the position is provided by the Captain or District Chief and other management personnel of the Fire Department.
Lieutenants are required to supervise Driver/Operators, Firefighters, Probationary Firefighters. During suppression activities or emergency management activities, Lieutenants may serve as the Incident Commander or in any position assigned by the Incident Commander. Lieutenants may also serve as mentors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for carrying out operations for the fire department under the supervision of the Captain/ District Chief. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned employees, processing concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, mentoring, and completing employee and call personnel performance standard evaluations. Assists in development, teaching, and evaluating curriculum related to district operations and firefighting techniques.
• Respond to fires and related emergency activities, prepare incident reports and reports concerning the use and condition of apparatus, related equipment, and supplies.
• Coordinates fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services activities with those of other fire stations, outside agencies, and organizations
• Ensure all in-service equipment and apparatus have been inspected, cleaned and maintained as needed.
• Notify supervisors of all equipment needing repair or service to maintain operational readiness.
• Maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and materials
• Operates as the initial Incident Commander and may function in any command role.
• Provides and coordinates personnel training and may participate in scheduling the training activities for an entire shift
• Prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence, and reviews all reports prepared by subordinate personnel.
• May conduct fire prevention inspections of commercial, residential, and other occupancies for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention codes and ordinances.
• Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of fire suppression and prevention
• Prepares reports regarding building surveys and completes incident response reports
• Identifies opportunities for improving work methods and procedures, reviews with appropriate management staff and implement improvements.
• Monitors workflow, reviews, and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures
• Meets with personnel to identify and resolve problems and assigns work activities and projects
• Provides staff assistance to the assigned Captain or District Chief
• May perform duties of higher classification, in an acting capacity, as needed • May perform duties of a lower classification as needed
• Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment & Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily in an office, in vehicles, and/or in outdoor settings in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during daytime and at night.
- Ability to work abnormal, extended or flex hours.
- Adverse or potentially hazardous environments will be routinely present during training exercises and emergency responses. Moderate to heavy lifting, under high physical exertion, with protective clothing and SCBA, will be required in high-heat environments for an extended period.
