Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant and active surveillance of assigned aquatic zones.
  • Enforce all YMCA safety rules, policies, and health department regulations.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to emergencies in accordance with YMCA protocols.
  • Complete incident and accident reports accurately and promptly.
  • Conduct pool area inspections for hazards before and during shifts.
  • Perform chemical testing as required and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Ensure rescue and safety equipment is available and in working condition.

  • Build positive, professional relationships with members and participants.
  • Greet and assist members in a welcoming and respectful manner.
  • Model YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Support a culture of belonging by treating everyone with dignity and inclusion.

Operational Excellence

  • Maintain accurate records as required by YMCA and regulatory standards.
  • Attend required in-service trainings (monthly during school year; bi-monthly summer).
  • Maintain all required certifications and proactively coordinate renewals.
  • Participate in staff meetings and required association trainings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Certifications

  • Minimum age: 15 years old
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
    (YMCA certification required within 60 days of hire if not already obtained)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Basic First Aid
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration
  • Ability to successfully pass lifeguard water and written tests
  • Demonstrated physical and mental readiness to perform rescues

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Maintain constant visual surveillance of assigned area.
  • Hear and respond to distress signals in noisy environments.
  • Perform water rescues and lift individuals as required.
  • Communicate clearly and project voice across distance.
  • Work in indoor or outdoor aquatic environments with exposure to noise, temperature changes, and chemicals.
